Bear in mind that the "God" toward which Vidal is an atheist is the Christian concept of God, or more precisely yet, the generally accepted and promulgated concept, and that's a product of political processes...a false/human-created "God"...an idol, like one of Bacon's. I think he'd agree there may be a real God but what the real God is like, who knows?

What was the name of the show? What does it mean to be "battling for atheism"? Why should anyone contend for atheism? Are ALL the members featured here dead now? Hey, saw your write-up, mind if I weigh in? (If you wish to engage, feel free to pick just one topic from the 1-2-3 you see below that corresponds to your own list.) 1. So you believe that "live and let live" is the standard all men ought to abide by then? Why are YOU an atheist? Top 3 reasons maybe? 2. Who would you consider a few heavyweights in the atheists camp today and why? What is "poetic" about the atheists position? Didn't an atheist write a book about, supposedly, consciousness being an illusion? If stardust is all we are, why should anyone care? 3. But is it possible for the atheist to make a positive, scientific, evidence based case FOR their own naturalistic position? Why should anyone be an atheist? What do you mean by "the dignity she deserves"? It sounds like you're assuming things that, I don't see how mindless atoms could account for. You're making value judgments here, correct? Well, based upon whose or what >>immaterial<< standard? Okay, I'm done! Just thought you might want some action on a decade old post. 😁

What does he mean by "good behavior"? Seems to me he's assuming a standard of some kind. But then, how can atoms produce immaterial standards of behavior that somehow comport with reality-that larger clumps of atoms are somehow obligated to abide by? Is that just his imagination running while or did he have a rational and/or scientific reason for believing that?

What the man seemed to lack was... evidence or argument. Though he was quite happy with himself and his assertions. Well, I'm sure he's dead now. So he's either fully aware that he was dead wrong... or simply not aware of anything at all, since if he was correct, there is no longer a he to be aware. ZOINKS! BONK!!

On Vidal's final remark, I would say that the notion of 'a good human being', cosy as it seems, is entirely vacuous if it is not grounded in something solid. Christ seems to be the obvious archetype here.

I'm non-religious and I can fully understand the notion that some ideas of some religions can provide comfort, reassurance, solace, etc. I get that. I just don't think there's any reason to think any of those notions exist independently of human minds. I'm far more convinced of the validity and existence of concepts emerging from centuries of iterative advances in science than any religious ideas. The audience member who asserted that a God exists because of some personal experience is typical of the sort of reasoning that is common to faith-based ideas and utterly absent from scientific ideas. we can be fooled and for ideas to rise above the improbable and into a realm where we can not only start to increase our understanding we must be able to separate any idea from an individuals subjective experience, to describe that thing, to have it be something concrete enough to reproduce and hopefully be specific enough to falsify.

Timothy 2 1 You may be quite sure that in the last days there will be some difficult times. 2 People will be self-centred and avaricious, boastful, arrogant and rude; disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious; 3 heartless and intractable; they will be slanderers, profligates, savages and enemies of everything that is good; 4 they will be treacherous and reckless and demented by pride, preferring their own pleasure to God. 5 They will keep up the outward appearance of religion but will have rejected the inner power of it. Keep away from people like that.

Christianity is so simplistic and reactionary it's laughable that anyone claiming to be serious, believes a word of it. For me their constant claims of belief, prove the opposite. Nobody screams and shouts about anything they really believe in, they take it as read. That's impossible for Christians because they all know it's rubbish. Their obvious and total insecurity, when claiming to be in possession of the true word of their omnipotent God, says everything.

At 5:09, the always unanswered after life question has always interested me. If there’s some sort of afterlife, do you remain what you are at that moment for eternity? Do a new born dies and forever is a new born? Die at 100 and you remain 100? Do you revert to the best version of yourself? What do the religious think happens? Seems to me that after an eternity has passed and you were in some energy/spirit state, you will have been everywhere in the universe, seen everything, learned everything, and basically become a god. Then what? I think an actual end is better.

6:26 when it comes to this woman’s argument, I would say that this actually only prevents people from accepting that their relatives are gone and devalues their relationships to a degree in this life. For example if you don’t believe that there is an afterlife and believe this is all you get, you do indeed have an incentive at the very least to make sure that your relationships with relatives and friends are good so you don’t regret anything when they pass. If you do believe however, a person could just say “well I didn’t resolve x with them but when I see them again in heaven then we’ll have the opportunity to make amends”. You will still treasure the memories you had with them but you won’t as much as someone who doesn’t believe in an afterlife who believes all they truly have left are memories. It actually more serves to prevent yourself from truly accepting that they are gone and moving on with your life. Certainly I wouldn’t be able to accept it if I did believe because I know for sure that I’ll see them again. What would be the point if I believe that I will indeed “see” them again? No lessons would be learned because I wouldn’t have any actual reason to do so.

God is a personal God, He doesnt appeal to everyone the same ways. there certain things which happens to a persons heart and mind once they truly experience God. They become more devoted, mentality changes and spirituality becomes a part of them. Its not just a fleeting feeling. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. God is someone Who comes to those who seek after him. Its not fair for you to expect God to appeal to you and communicate with you, when you couldnt care less about Him. In natural senses imagine calling someone who never picks up the phone, and talking well about someone who backstabs you consistently. Would it be fair to expect them to love and support you. Of course not. Think logically sir.

I think Mr. Vidal has changed his mind now. While he was a very erudite, witty and entertaining intellectual and a vanishing breed, his take on the spiritual is not the truth. If you study nature in great detail, and really open your spiritual eyes, you see the majesty of the very loving God, the One Creator of the universe. There is no question. We need Him more than ever now.

The idea of there being exalted and less exalted spiritual beings comes from people that were spiritual. It doesnt come from ordinary men, but is inspired and proven by God Himself. There are millions of people around the world, that have had dreams visions and experiences with spiritual states in a literal sense. I am one of them. I cannot tell you what to believe but i will say if you look for them you will find them. God exists, the God of the bible is proven in a undeniable way, not just because of what i said earlier. But because Israel exists to this day, and Jesus name is recorded in the history books, almost every scholar acknowledges Jesus Christ existence. The bible is reality, because it talks about worldly situations from a worldly view and a spiritual view.
