Guthrie Govan is without question, the greatest guitarist to ever live! His phrasing is beyond match and allows him to improvise from one to the next flawlessly. Zimmer truly made a great choice on guitar!

I love Guthrie when he is "restrained". This has to go along with my other two favourite solo's of his - Regret No 9 and (perhaps lesser known, but probably my 1st choice) on What Have You Done, a song by Nad Sylvan which ends with two great solos, one by Steve Hacket and the second by Guthrie. Go listen!

Pete Haycock's version fits the movie. Guthrie's fits in real life. There's something so extraordinarily emotional and human about this.

Guthrie is a huge guitar player but I think he doesn't really nails the Thunderbird mood as Pete Haycock did. Actually I think is missing that dreamy country blues warmth the original retain. That's a pity because the tune is so good!
@jcp1984again5 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree on this. Guthrie's version makes the theme more universal by disconnecting it from its musical genre roots.

Yes that’s a matter of personal taste so every opinion here is worth but I admit to myself that the emotions I feel listening to this m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqSuf2RpfNVkftU sits on another level than every Guthrie’ version and I love Guthrie’s playn’. It’ just something I feel in my deep emotions.

It's a great tune with two very different takes on it. I personally love Guthrie's version. The precision is just godly. As great as the Haycock version is it almost sounds sloppy by comparison to me now. Wish there was an equally good recording of Guthrie's performance as the Haycock so that we could be comparing apples to apples but seeing him perform this live brought tears to my eyes both times he performed it here in Melbourne.
@october65-h6e4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. If Guthrie had played the original version and Pete Haycock played this live version you would have sayed the same I think. Be honest.
@fabiane.r.45034 жыл бұрын
You know, really don’t understand why every time someone express an opinion on his own tastes it must be seen as a matter of competition about something. I don’t mind if someone thinks really the opposite from me he/she is right at all. Here is a matter of personal feelings, It doesn’t have to do on what is right or wrong. It’s like love, none can tell you who you have to love. You like Guthrie? You’re absolutely right! Who am I to say you don’t? From my personal point of view, the Haycock version has something different because he composed it together with Zimmer and putted in the original track his personal style and composition ideas, that are unique to any artists. In the original you have the original intention of the composer, saying in the music what he intended to put in. Guthrie’s version is fantastic I like him but I feel a different emotion coming from the other one: the slide guitar with a bit of germanium fuzz that darken the sound as was intended in the original composition to give that kind of vibe, the expression on every note has it’s own reason of being. Guthrie’s version is something different because that’s what Zimmer asked for, as he was a great friend of Haycock and when he died Zimmer didn’t want to play the song for a while because it was too sad for him, but because of the great asking for it he decided to play it again but in a different way so to don’t be close to the original (according to his interview about it). In the end I think the Guthrie’s version is a slight different cover of the original, if you like it you’re right, definitely! But for what I think there are so few covers better than the original and for my personal taste, this is not one of them, but it is the better version out of the original. If I think at some artists that “stole“ the original I think at Hurt by Johnny Cash from the Raznor version, at Hallelujah by Buckley from Cohen, at Over the rainbow/What a beautiful world by Kamakawivo’ole from Garland/Armstrong. They created a kind of new original from the previous versions. But actually, for this song I think it is just a very beautiful cover of the original. And of course it’s just my one within a seven billion opinion, I am not an horacle, anyone has it’s own right to think different. With love and respect❤️
