What do you mean by “tissue culture”?
@nevadanepenthes438 Жыл бұрын
There are a few different methods of propagating nepenthes, such as growing from seed, rooting cuttings, and tissue culture. To be honest, I know very little about the process, but tissue culture involves using a piece of tissue, such as a seed and cloning in a lab to make many plants that are genetically identical.

@nevadanepenthes4382 жыл бұрын
I use long fibered sphagnum and perlite. I just eyeball the mix, probably around 50/50 I used to use orchid bark, and it works well, but it breaks down a bit faster.

@nevadanepenthes4382 жыл бұрын
My Macrophylla has pretty much always had days of 70-80F, with nights of 55-60F. I'm hesitant to say it can't be done, because some growers will prove me wrong I'm sure. But with ultrahighland plants, often you won't notice the plant dying until its too late. They will look perfectly healthy, and then rapidly decline. If you are dead set on a Macrophylla, then give it the best temp drop you can and hope for the best. If you want teeth but don't have highland conditions, intermediate edwardsiana hybrids would be a great option. Good luck! :)

@@nevadanepenthes438 Thanks! I know the reply is late and I'm on a different account, but the plant arrived well, sulked for a year and has just now produced its first trap in my care. The trap isn't as toothy as the pitchers it already had, but I expected that. It's in a mix of sphagnum and perlite, but I want to change it to coco chips because sphagnum either stays too wet or too dry.

Firstly great plant's, really like those! Secondly what's the most likely cause of my plant's growing smaller pitcher's - would that be not quite enough light? They are perfectly formed but just half the size of the pitcher's they came with which is really annoying.
@nevadanepenthes4382 жыл бұрын
Could be a number of things, lighting would be my first guess, but if it's a newer plant (one you've gotten within the past couple months) it could also just be adjusting to your conditions.

How often do you water your plants and how do you do it? I try to keep my nep roots on the dry side but then my sphagnum dies
@nevadanepenthes4382 жыл бұрын
Hey sorry, just saw this. Honestly how often I water varies quite a bit. Most get water every 3 days or so, but it depends on how fast the individual plant is drying out. Keeping live sphagnum has always been pretty tricky for me too. For that exact reason. I let my plants get too dry for the sphagnum, but after awhile some moss starts to take hold. I just water them all by hand. Highland plants usually go a bit longer between watering as well It's easier to keep moss in the freezer because it's always cool and humid, but it won't grow on some pots.

Very good advise 👍 I repot my plants 99% of the time (maybe I have a trust issue? 😅) and this way I know everything is as good as it can be. I also wonder if there would not be a boost-growth related by disturbing the roots (stress) making the plant react. Anyway! as long as the result is here, we are happy!
@nevadanepenthes4382 жыл бұрын
Thanks 😊 I've also wondered if there may be some sort of stress reaction that shocks the plant into growing, but like you say, as long as they are growing happy, I'm happy.

Yeah I'm familiar with that channel, one of my hybrids is actually from him, brads greenhouse has done a similar setup as well. I've had mine for about a year without issue. I had one thermostat stop working, but I use two thermostats so it wasn't really an issue. Other than that there haven't been any problems.
