Early lvls you're best to do roll dmg spells like chill touch (well for Death Clerics), but for straight up Clerics its tough cause they don't have any. Then you can always bring out your crossbow but gotta put that shield away which can hurt. Low lvl Clerics are really just good for Bless and throwing a Healing Word up when needed, but after lvl 3, Spiritual Weapon starts to make them worth it and at lvl 5 they become my favourite class.
