So I already built a ham clock on a Pi and am just using an HDMI monitor and mouse. Is there some special coding or terminal commands I would need to get the touch screen working if I got this Pi monitor? Any help would be appreciated.

In my setup shown here the raspberry pi OS had the drivers to make it work with the touch screen. I'm using the "Official" 7" touch screen sold by the Pi Foundation. No idea if it works with other brand screens. Not long after I recorded this I repurposed the 7" touch screen and pi using it for a weather station project. I still run ham clock to this day but it runs on different Pi and on a 24" monitor now. I searched around and found this wording on the official touch screen instructions - "Touchscreen drivers with support for 10-finger touch and an on-screen keyboard will be integrated into the latest Raspbian OS for full functionality without a physical keyboard or mouse." Hope this helps.

Nice setup. The only two changes i would do is one, have the intake Stright up and down, second i would use an LiFePO4 battery. Just for others to know , you would need a LiFePO4 charge controller for that. For extra cred, I would add a Meshtastic node. I thank that little add on is good because everyone can join in the fun. Thanks for sharing.

What programs am I seeing on the two monitors? I shut down in 1984 due to work. I started buying and setting up again, but again, due to work I'm lucking if I have 30 minutes of air time. Being an Advance, I feel like a Novice with all the new hi-tech stuff out there. lol

I understand. The programs you see running should be WSJT-X, JT Alert & Grid Tracker. I have another video on this channel you might enjoy where I discuss how I use them and how I get them talking to each other. Here’s a link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZOmhoyanriSm68si=dkVHnRQu9qKJny5s

Those Harbor Freight panels and PWM charge controller ought to be outlawed! They are sooo expensive considering that they are only 100W. This kit currently retails for $169.99. You could have got a "proper" solar panel and a MPPT controller and a few beers for less than that. I'd be interested to see how well all that plastic surrounding the panels fairs in the UV. And the electrical wiring is a bit limp too. They supply the panels with inadequate gauge cabling and so there's a huge voltage drop over short distances. Kudos for your MacGyvering skills though!!
@KC5TGTRadiosNMore
@KC5TGTRadiosNMore 10 ай бұрын
I do not disagree that Harbor Freight is charging way too much for these panels today. I did mention @ 1:21 in the video that these were old panels that I had in storage. So I decided to put them to use for this project. That said, I did not pay _current prices_ for these and when I did purchase them of course I used a coupon. LOL I think I got them years ago for around $89.00 if memory serves me right. I would still recommend using better panels and charge controllers if you have the money to do so. But sometimes to control cost you got to use what you already have on hand. For this project I already had the Solar Panel Kit, Plastic Box, Computer Fan & Car Battery. The Rohn Tower, Coax and Antenna had been abandon in place due to the owner relocating. And the Motorola Radio was donated to assist with getting this project "on the air". The wood and tin used is old and were left overs from odd projects. To complete it I had to purchase the WX3in1 (not cheap), Argent Data Audio Adapter (cheap), Vonets Wi-Fi Adapter (cheap) and the Powerwerx distribution block (cheap). Kinda had to laugh when you mentioned MacGyver because it's not the first time I've been accused of making things work from scraps.... Several of my friends call me MacGyver as a nickname. Thanks for watching and take care!

I encourage you to do just that. Let me know how it goes. I've tried to set a personal goal of making at least one contact on 10m each day while the band is hot during this solar cycle. I've missed a few days here or there but it's been fun trying to stay committed to that goal.

@@KC5TGTRadiosNMore that’s a great goal, “a ten meter contact a day”. I followed up and did an activation on Sunday using my HTX-10. I also found the matching Radio Shack SWR / Power Meter and incorporated that into my setup. Funny thing is my first contact was a guy who worked at RS as a kid. He said that radio was his gateway into ham radio 😎👍. It went great. Thanks again for the motivation. 73

That's awesome! Glad you tried it and what a great first contact. Hope more will take advantage of this great opportunity with 10m while it last. I hear stations in CA practically every afternoon, now wouldn't it be funny if we made a contact with each other using just the HTX-10's.... LOL We might have to give that a try!

Awesome contacts. What mag mount brand and model did you use? KO4HPC
@KC5TGTRadiosNMore
@KC5TGTRadiosNMore 11 ай бұрын
The antenna is made by PCTel Maxrad the model is MLB2700. The magnetic mount is just a generic one. But I’ve discovered that this antenna will probably work much better if it was connected directly to the vehicle body with a NMO mount. The low power of the HTX-10 doesn’t seem to care but if I use a higher powered radio I’m getting RF back into my rig. Still experimenting with this at the moment but thought I’d throw it out there…. I think the antenna is great, I’m pretty sure it’s the mag mount that’s causing me problems.

May i ask why you chose to pull the operating power directly from the battery rather than from the load port on the solar controller? Also I noted you have a custom Map Icon for this station, Black diamond with overlay, how did you do that? This is quite similar to one I am putting together here in NM, I hope I have as good a result as you have here.

If my memory serves me right, the docs have recommend to pull power from the battery. You can pull more current from the battery and not over load the controller.

What did you use to clean the residual tape/glue from the old emblems?
@KC5TGTRadiosNMore
@KC5TGTRadiosNMore Жыл бұрын
Not sure exactly what would get it off because I didn’t reuse the old emblems. They went in the trash. The emblems installed in this video are the factory black Honda emblems purchased from the dealer parts counter. But I’d guess you could use your fingers to push and roll a majority of the tape glue off the back of the old emblems and then use a light cleaner like rubbing alcohol or a wax and grease remover product to get the remaining glue. Hope this helps.

How do you get it to fill the entire screen? I have a 23" monitor. When I select full screen, all it does is put the small image in the middle of a black field. I'm using HamPi on a Raspberry pi 3.

I still use HamClock in my shack and I believe when I initially set it up I used the commands shown for different monitor sizes shown on the "Desktop" tab on the clearskyinstitute.com webpage. Hate that you are having trouble. I hope the instructions there will point you in the right direction. I've never used HamPi before. Not sure if that has something to do with the display issues? To rule out HamPi I'd try installing a clean copy of Raspbian "Bullseye" on a formatted SD and try setting HamClock up from scratch following the instructions on their website and see if it behaves differently?

I had this radio when it first came out and it was great. I think it was around 1300.00 with a 300.00 rebate. The new FTDX 10 blows it away at around the same price, a little higher I think around 1600.00. The only way I would buy a used FTDX 1200 is if it was around 400.00. I Don't think I would buy any used gear now, new is so cheap. Would you buy a used cell phone? The 7300 is king but now the FTDX 10 showed up and crushed it and the 7610.

Well it has plenty speed, but personally I wouldn't go fast on the trails in this video. It's probably doesn't translate well on the video but in some areas the trail is barely wide enough for it to fit and in other areas the trail has very uneven slopes. Going fast on this trail is a recipe for damaging the ranger, or getting injured. (or both) Plus this model is the basic Ranger, it's 4x4 and all that good stuff but it's typically best suited for farm and large property work. Which is what I use it for most of the time and it does a wonderful job of it. If you want speed off road you probably should step up to the higher performance Ranger RZR. But you will need spaces to ride where the trails are more open and/or maybe a desert type areas to ride at really fast speeds. For me this model fits my needs just fine, good for a little off road use here and there but mostly gets used for daily work task around the property.
