Really enjoyed that - took me back 30 years when I managed the (Sgumain)-Alasdair-Thearlaich part of your route, the most difficult thing I've ever done in the hills. On that occasion I'd been planning to descend Thearlaich via your ascent route, but sunset wasn't far off, common sense prevailed, and I retreated to the Great Stone Chute. Just as well, looking at the drop to the gap shown on your video.

Great video. If you're crossing fast flowing water face upstream and use your stick to give yourself a triangular base. Much easier than taking the water on one side and the water locks your knees for you. If it's very fast only use one shoulder strap and undo any belt. If you then do fall in you won't be pinned by the weight of your pack.

Hi Chris, totally love how dramatic nature is in the Faroes. Was there in 2018 to run a half marathon from Saksun over the mountains to Tjørnuvik - an unforgettable experience besides almost dying from it (kidding). I love how you venture to the extreme edges for THAT photo - respect sir! I would like to explore a lot more of the islands as we were mostly in Torshavn during a long weekend visit. Enjoying your content! Best Klaus

Klaus, respect for running a 1/2 marathon over those mountains I would have liked to hike that route but I was with photographers not hikers LOL. Yes Faroes is very dramatic both in landscape and weather. Make a resolution to book a return trip IMO you wouldn't regret it and if you want some location ideas hit me up.

4.23 why is the roof covered with grass??? why did you not climb up the lighthouse??? 0.05 why is the water on the right higher than on the left?? no knee pain from climbing or a secret liniment for knee??
@ChrisNewham
@ChrisNewham 3 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for so many questions I will try to answer them 1: The roofs are covered with grass for insulation its a traditional method. 2: The lighthouse is not open to the public you can't go inside. 3: The water on the right and left is the same height, its an optical illusion as the land on the left is a lot higher than the land on the right. 4: I generally don't have knee pain it all depends on the terrain and I'm getting older so some discomfort is expected, I have no special secrets I'm just careful when I walk to not injure myself I hope those answers help you, please take a look at my other Faroes videos and see if you have anymore questions.

Thanks, I think there must be a bit of Scots in us LOL plus we saw a guy who came the other way who told us it was only thigh deep so we actually did have an idea of what we were getting into. If I can find a few hours I will try and edit the footage I took here last year on a nice summers day the contrast is amazing and the stepping stones are a big tourist draw.

Isn’t “crux” the word? No hate because I’ve seen someone post a video called “the bad step on helvelynn” and I just though hikers and climbers used the word crux? Great video anyway
@ChrisNewham
@ChrisNewham Жыл бұрын
No hate at all, thanks for the comment. The bad step is the name of the particular rock/section of the hike its on the map lots of rocks have names. What a climber would say is that the bad step section was the "crux" move ie it was the most difficult portion of the climb and typically if you can't complete the crux move you cant complete the climb although there is sometime an alternative route that bypasses the crux move.

I don't know about not being inherently dangerous i wouldn't like to fall off the Bad Step!A steel cable like the one on the Elie Chain ⛓️ Walk on the east coast would make it easier and less of a challenge.

@ChrisNewham

Thanks I'm glad you liked the footage, yes if your not confident about something especially alone its worth not doing it, the mountains will still be there next time you get to Skye and perhaps you will be blessed with nice weather and can go do it. Remember the camera makes it look worse than it is, the hike was well worth the effort.

Hey Chris, I’m heading over to that area next Spring from the US and looking for some day hikes. On one section of your hike (around the 2 minute mark of the video) it looks like you are climbing up a steep cliff. Is that just an effect from the camera, or is there a technical climb section on your route?
@ChrisNewham
@ChrisNewham Жыл бұрын
Don't panic its just an effect from the camera angle that makes it look far worse than it is. If your a mountain hiker you will have no issues there are no technical sections or climbs its all mountain walking/hiking. Go do this route the views are amazing and you will be away from the crowds.
