Done! I wanted to make a bag to take on a trip to Oxford, and this is the perfect size for a bit of adventuring. My sewing skills leave a lot to be desired, but I'm proud of myself for having the courage to try anyway, the patience to redo stuff when needed, the self compassion to endure some wonky seams, and the creativity to come up with solutions when I did something that couldn't be reversed. 😄 Thank you for an excellent pattern and tutorial!

@@hannu933 Hi! The pattern says 'confident beginner' and I feel like that sums it up pretty well. I hadn't used bias tape or done top stitching before, so there were definitely some new techniques and trial and error, but this video was very helpful. If you're up for a little challenge and learning, then absolutely, go ahead! :)

Love this pattern! Thank you for the tutorial - I am a beginner and it turned out great! Any suggestions for making a smaller version?
@gracomakes
@gracomakes 4 ай бұрын
You can print the pattern at a smaller scale, say 80%, then will have to make some small adjustments to things like zipper length and strap width - but that should be a good starting point!

Do you by any chance remember the approx weight of this outer fabric used?
@gracomakes
@gracomakes 9 ай бұрын
Yes the flowery outer fabric is 8.5oz (it’s a twill)! That weight worked really well. Use a cord like paracord (something non stretch) in the cinch channels like I did if you use something of that weight. The teal fabric in the bag is have at the beginning is a lot lighter than that (dont know what weight though - maybe 6oz).

is there a proper seam length for the basting stitch or is anywhere sort of along the edge ok? When does it get removed?
@gracomakes
@gracomakes Жыл бұрын
Anywhere just along the edge as long as its within the 1/2” seam allowance. They wont get removed but will get cut off or covered when you cover the inner seams with bias binding.
@gracomakes
@gracomakes Жыл бұрын
Alternatively, you can remove your basting stitches after you’ve sewn the bottom panels to the side panels if you’d like. The basting is just there to keep the outer and lining pieces together nicely

Hi! I’m currently working on this but I’m kinda stuck at the part where you put the tabs at the of the long zipper.. how do you sew throw the zipper? You kinda explained it on vid but I can’t make out what your saying 😊. I think “hang thread” through zipper? Tia!
@gracomakes
@gracomakes Жыл бұрын
“Hand crank” through zipper! If your zipper is nylon, you should be able to sew through it normally but if its plastic or metal, use the hand crank wheel on your sewing machine instead of the foot pedal otherwise you may break the needle! Hopefully that makes more sense.

hi grace! if i’m using cotton fabric for the outer panels, would lining it with interfacing be a good idea to give it structure? or do you think it wouldn’t look so good with more structure
@gracomakes

Hi! I think thats definitely a good option. It will be quite floppy with cotton fabric (it is a fairly floppy bag regardless, but will be even more so with a light fabric). I think others have used interfacing and have had a lot of success!

made one of these bags and it turned out pretty solid, gonna make a few more for gifts!! question - are you hand-basting these bags? i'm pretty new to sewing and i've read you can baste via machine but i was wondering if there's a technique that's easier overall, i'm pretty comfy using my sewing machine now and have read you can do like a really long stitch to baste but i wasn't totally sure
@gracomakes
@gracomakes Жыл бұрын
Hey!! Glad your bag turned out well!! I don’t hand baste for this bag - I use the longest stitch length my machine offers and baste with the machine. I would hand baste more complicated, finiky things, generally on garmets that I really don’t want to mess up - things like zippers, welt pockets etc. But honestly I do a LOT of basting via the machine because I’m impatient 🤓
