I got to see Johnny Winters twice.. before he passed and his brother Edgar twice to... But I think this was the last year I seen him and I actually got a bootleg of him playing in Pittsburgh in a bar called the rosebud.. Metropol.. and that is on VHS so.. so when I seen him here I was amazed that he actually lived to be 71 because he wasn't as vibrant as the 70s.. still miss you Johnny

He was really messed up at this point apparently. Too much methadone and alcohol. My band opened for JW in ‘92 . He was promoting his ‘ Let Me In’ album and he was still hot and lucid and ‘with it’. We met him after the show and he was very nice and gracious to us and thanked us for opening the show for him.. This is really sad to see..

Let Me In is such a great album, probably my favourite after the classic 70's period.

I took a lesson with Larry in 2010 (?) and later asked him to help sponsor my work visa to the US which he did with relish. We became friends. Not close friends - but close enough for the occasional dinner together. My band opened for him in Toronto, in June 2012. Prior to the show Larry and I browsed some vintage record stores which was a riot because Larry had a funny story about every jazz musician whose album he found in the racks. A great racontour and a swell guy. After his set he asked me to join him on stage to play a tune I wrote that he liked. No doubt THE proudest and most delightful moment of my musical life. RIP Maestro

The tune is Sunny, not Sonny. Written and first a hit by Bobby Hebb. It’s not about a person, it’s actually about a sunny disposition or attitude. Hebb’s brother was murdered (I think after gig and Bobby was there, I’d I recall correctly) and a close friend also died soon after. Bobby got so despondent over the next year, he was close to taking his own life. Finally he realized that he had to have a sunny attitude about his own life, if he was to survive. This revived him,he wrote the tune and it became his biggest hit and became a jazz and soul standard. Turns out it is one of the most frequently recorded tunes ever!

Wow playing a red 335. I don't recall seeing him play one before. This helps justify my purchase of my red 335. 😅

I met and talked to Larry many times when I was in sales at Cort Guitar. We had a guitar named after him. Nice guy. Played for us in the office. He once played at a fund raiser for Matt Guitar Murphy of legendary The Blues Brothers fame after a NAMM show in LA. What a night. Bernard Purdy was on the drums.

"How did he or she know that was going to happen and why did they react that way?". After a certain point, you get tired of being subjected to the 'run around' and you just react and let the support personnel do their thing. With musicians and athletes, you can just relax and let it all happen.

I just don't know what to do anymore. When you have dreams that are so real and you see and speak with random people, then you have dreams that you know are your brain biologically "AI hallucinating", it becomes complicated. I always retire to things or events that I know are pure. Watching musicians or an athletes "zone in" is comforting. Seeing someone else experiencing "the zone" and knowing that you have PERSONALLY spoken with a neurologist and physicist studying it is rewarding. This is magic. You can see it happening.

Her genius and influence is often overlooked because she was a black woman. Jazz should be better than that.
