Was there ever anyone who equals Isobel Baillie in the clarity of presenting 'I know that my redeemer liveth'? She takes me into a different world.. Isobel has been my inspiration for decades.

On mighty pens uplifted soars the eagle aloft, and cleaves the sky in swiftest flight to the blazing sun. The merry lark bids welcome to the morn, and cooing calls the tender dove his mate. From every bush and grove resound the nightingale’s delightful, liquid notes. No grief affected yet her breast, nor to a mournful tale were tun’d her soft, enchanting lays

Kathleen Ferrier is the only singer who can make you cry from the first note on. Not just the beauty of her voice but the beauty of her soul.

So through this song i know her origins. She was a Scot. She has the voice of a Celtic angel.

Purity of tone, vocal control, and meaningful intonation. Were opera singers taught better in the days when microphones were not necessary for a singer to project and fill an opera house with music?

Nobody sings like this any more - such a steely chest voice married to a clear high silvery head register. No leaning on a straight tone, no hooting, no crooning. It's time for the pendulum to swing back the other way in terms of vocal coaching and training.

To think that she performed it in 1941 during World War 2 a really dark time in World history. Yet she never gave up hope in Christ, it shows that God's Light shines brightly even in our darkest moments. We need never despair.

Was it her autobiog that was titled 'Never sing louder than lovely'? If so, this is a prime example of what she meant. Restrained simple beauty.

I have listened to probably well over 1000 vocal recordings on KZbin, and this specific one quite possibly tops the lot for beauty of singing.

Isobel Baillie's interpretation of this song when I'm depressed or feeling down which has the most meaning for me. Her angelic voice and dramatic reading of this work brings to me the encouragement from the scripture to carry on. I'm also impressed with the photos showing her growth from a young woman to one who is honored by her country. My thanks to Roy Gardner for posting this video.

The fact that we can still hear and have access to music performed over 95 years ago is an absolute privilege not to be taken lightly. There’s a quality in it that transcends the technical imperfections of recording of the time and contains an innocent quality that makes it special.
