the extra beads seem really unnecessary, why not just do the exchange directly?

I have been looking for the role of top altobeed in the 2x5 abacus. Very well explained the role of top row of altobeeds as exchange . I am very much impressed by the clarity of expressions and intonation. My appreciations. I would love to know more about the Rule of 17 beeds for additions . Regards. Rangarajan

5-3 4-3 4-2 F****ING abacus I cannot see the answer of 5+9 on my abacus.... I feel so dumb and stressed right now. Need more practice.

5 + 9 = add 1 on the tens column to represent ten subtract 5 on the ones column to represent 5 You added 10 + 5 at this point, but you only wanted 9 + 5, so subtract 1 from the 5 on the tens column to get four. The answer is 14.

I'm very confused as to why there are two beads on the top if they are just automatically being converted to one lower bead in the next column. It seems like a superfluous action that slows you down compared to the other method?

I am learning the Japanese and the Chinese abacus. I am doing subtraction and addition on both and have to agree that the Chinese abacus is easier. The Japanese has little friends and big friends and the boss, but once you start to learn it it get easier and they should teach this in school as it would help the children to learn. Nice video but too short.

I cant believe you goys are so missing the point, you dont need groups of 5 beads, or in the bigger abacus's 10 beads....we are counting in decimal so only need 9 beads to trade on each line.......on a 4 bead you slide up to 4 beads then if you want to ADD one more , then in ONE ACTION you slide ove the 5 bead and carry on your hand movement to reset the 4 beads back to zero!! So you have no 1-4 beads and one 5 bead easy 5.....next use the same principal add up to all the 4 beads thats 4+a 5 bead =9 then to add one more as there are no more 1 or 5 beads left st slide in the adding direction, reset the 5 bead and all the 1 beads and just add one more in the TEN'S colum same on a 9*1 bead frame as you get to 9 , the highest digit value in any series , to add one you just slide over the ( now the extra bead at the end of the row is equal to TEN not FIVE) ten bead and in the same gesture continue to slide your hand and reset the complete row of NINE beads over to the left ...YOU DONT NEED TEN BEADS ON A ROW as you never actually have all of the ten beads to the left !! because that would be ten in the units row!!! Japan took the five plus two bead frame and went to a FOUR plus TWO then a four plus ONE for the same reason..
