When you start looking around at what's going on under the water with wildlife, it's obvious that evolution is having a damn party.

Awesome! I would just caution anyone wanting to try the rope lure to make sure you clear all the strands before releasing. Otherwise the strands make it impossible for the fish to open their mouth and they starve to death. Awesome video Capt! And its not sad. Targeting native fish rules. No shame dude.

Thanks for the tips! Even though the rope didn’t get any bites that day, I have some things to try tweaking for next time. Still fun though

Great video, do you dye any of the buck tails?
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
Never have, but might have to try it sometime. It’s just so hard to beat a plain white bucktail jig 😆

Nice to know I'm actually doing things right for once :-D I keep a rubbermaid tote with about 2 boxes of borax in it up in the attic and an old wire mesh fishtank cover that lays over the top. Works for other (tying grade) skins too. I've picked up all kinds of fun stuff over the years. Your big enemy is subcutaneous fat. Take the time to clean everything well. If you encounter something that might have fleas, ticks, or bird lice- go ahead and just submerge it in dry borax for a couple days. That will dry out anything living. Then flatten out as you said while it's still reasonably pliable (within a couple days)

I don’t think there is a wrong way to do it, unless it starts stinking. Then you know you did something wrong lol

Gotta give you credit, I don't think I could sit there for that long and keep my hands still, especially in the cold. Good job though!
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
I can’t keep my hand still either. Have to rest my jigging hand on my knee to keep it still enough to see the bite.

Any experience using something like a Sabiki rig? I've never fished for smelt, but have for other baitfish under lights
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
I used to string several smaller (size 14) ice jigs in-line and that system worked very well. I always found that glow jigs outperformed everything else by far. Can't imagine you wouldn't catch some on a sabiki too.

Those were some whopper gills. Do they get more colorful in the summer. They look awful pale, like they were in a lake with lots of weeds. Keep the good stuff coming.
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
Nope they look that way year round. It is a very clear lake with minimal weed growth, so they are very unique in appearance. Thanks for watching!

Can you use frozen suckers for bait? The reason I as is there's a pretty good sucker run on a river I'm familiar with and I could probably catch bait for a year in a day/ Keep the good stuff coming.
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
Yes, I cut them into strips and salt heavily before freezing. The salt helps to toughen them up.

Nice batch of gills, it would make my wife happy. So how do you catch those guys an a 2 wt. fly rod?
@terrelltyler43082 жыл бұрын
Those are definitely nice bluegill 😮but why go through so much to just let em go?🤷🏾♂️
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
Terrell, thanks for watching! Big bluegills are extremely prone to over harvest, so it is important to protect the resource. Here is a great video that explains how over-harvest can lead to an overall size decrease in a population: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3iTqYScqbZ9pbM

On a side note nice catch on that rod lol Also thanks for taking care of the monsters!
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
There have been studies that prove how removing the largest male bluegills from a population will reduce the overall size of the fish. Pretty interesting, and that’s why those big dudes go back 😁
@DWSOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
If I am not mistaken those are Long Ear Bluegill correct?
@againstthestream68372 жыл бұрын
Those are just 100% bluegills. One of them appeared to have a longer ear, but it was just a different coloration on the Gill flap. Thanks for watching! 🙏

Back in the day I had a 200ft + anchor Rope for vertical jigging lakers….what a pain. Anchor Mode is the BEST!

Game changer for sure. Thinking back on it, anchoring in 100+ feet of water sounds crazy...
