Thanks for sharing your experience. What do think is the best level ( hight) of the header tank, relative to the cylinder head/ valve cover and the top of the radiator? What about the proper cooling fluid, if you don't go for genuine LR?
@HeinerStorchennest1Ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for sharing your experience. I did Not get the while story, so May I ask, is there a Special reason for the T4 Bonnet or did you Swap the 300TDi for the TD4 engine? Did you "Upgrade" the engine with some ( brazilian) 2.8 (300TDi) parts? ( Crankshaft e.g.). I like the electronic free 300TDi Discovery (3dr Trophy model) and the 200TDi in my 109 S3 ex-mod, too. Regards Heinz, Germany
@grandrovervoyager16 күн бұрын
Hello Heinz. Thanks for your interest. I just like the bonnet - no special reason. This engine was a second hand 1995 300tdi that I fully rebuilt and fitted about 10 years ago. It served us well until last year. It had some mods - larger ally radiator, full size intercooler & a variable vane turbo. We have made a 2nd film about the issues we've had recently & are currently putting together part 3 which documents the replacement engine with a brand new 2.8 300tdi (it has been in a week & we are still test driving it). I too prefer no electronics. All the best. Tony

How many miles has this engine done? Would be interesting to know what went wrong with the old engine, 300tdi's are usually super reliable if taken care of. Hope your new engine serves you well.

@@Chris-wz4zr it's a 1995 engine that was bought 2nd hand. Possibly 100,000 miles - difficult to know 🤔

When u when u do lots of miles in these 300 tdi they evaporate a lot of water but not enough that will just noticeably no ,I no this sounds weird,and yes I had the same issue in summer time were I thought I was loosing water with no visible signs until I put a very sensitive sensor on my water tank and noticed in how weather they actually u quit a bit and due to the pump being higher than the head tank it creates a air lock what makes the engine overheating when using less water than u would think in the header tank ,like only quarter of a litre with some engines. So with all them miles that u was doing it does not surprise me that this was happening so much on long journeys .hope that helps and it’s all about side of top ups on long journeys 😁

My knee jerk reaction is you have a dodgy block. Be it warped or cracked internally. The other thing is how much power are you taking out of the engine? Ultimately I'd say you are doing the right thing but do check everything like the rad and the viscus fan with the new engine. Also I see you have a full width intercooler. I had to block the whole space between my rad and the wings, as I was having air being pulled around the rad and not going through the rad on my engine. I'm talking like a 1" gap was causing a problem but I could feel the air being pulled around the rad. Lovely to see another isle of Wight truck so far away! Message me if you'd like more details.

She's not from IOW. The current number plate was a replacement when she was re - registered as a 6 wheeler. DVLA, in their wisdom wouldn't let me keep the original plate because of the modifications. Had to have another plate & decided to keep it to the same year as the original (B444 SFD). Thanks for your input.
@Jasonbiripicountry27 күн бұрын
Yeah agree with what you are saying mate, if by changing the header tank did nothing. The quite clearly it's either an internal problem with the engine, or the cooling system isn't sufficient enough. Like you said airflow , and I check the whole cooling system under pressure

Fantastic, i have a 300tdi in my '95 110. Amazing how they keep going. Unbeknown to me i had a crack in the head which let water in to the no4 cylinder intake, when i cranked it one day it went bang and bent a conrod! Amazingly it still ran! Was just a bit down on power. I replaced the Conrod and hopefully its good for another 200 thousand miles! Great vehicle you have!

I have a 300TDI myself, and recently had to have a new high pressure diesel pump fitted as the apparently contaminated fuel in Lesotho reduced the lubricating effect of the diesel. I mention this because you said these engines would run on paraffin. I wouldn't recommend this for the above reason.
@grandrovervoyager11 ай бұрын
They will run on any oil based fuel but it must be clean. It's when you get diesel with water in it is what does the damage as not all the water will sit in the bottom of the filter also extremely fine sand can pass through as I have experienced in North Africa.
@gordonbragge16439 ай бұрын
Add standard 40 grade oil to your tank before filling(to get a good mix) with paraffin and it will be okay.

Too bad you guys were there when you were. Most smoke on record and the busiest tourist season on record. We went through between Aug10th -21st. Wasn’t quite as busy. Still skipped Banff, Lake Louise and Moraine lake. Spent all of our time in the Icefields and Jasper. If you’re headed towards Vancouver island, check out Cathedral grove. Giant cedar trees. I believe from the island or Tsawwassen you can ferry to Washington state and start your journey south once the weather starts to turn in late September/October. Cheers.
