I bet this is a clear an explanation as can be done, but there are some very fine distinctions involved here. I would love to see a Venn diagram showing the relationships between Expressionism, Realism and Post Impressionism.

This may be educational for christian folk, Pagans already know all this.

Pagans dont pretend to be christians! Catholicism had to incorporate Pagan tradition to coerce the take over. Butterflies represent mind control, especially the Monarch. Animals mate around this time, so are spotted & heard more. Rabbits represent fertility. Triskele. Earth Water Sky connection. Protestants were Templars. Aphrodite Unut both associated with Rabbit/Hare. Boudicca's patron goddess, Andraste. Egyptian lore states the rabbit replaced the snake. Snakes lay eggs. Some believe the dark side of the moon is shaped like a hare. Rabbit was sacred to Hermes as a fleet-footed messenger. Grimm bros mention Holde the Moon Goddess. Eostre turned her bird into a rabbit to collect eggs as gifts for the children. White rabbit symbology represents innocence, purity & magic & has become a child trafficking symbol.

Thank you so much Michael, listening and learning while painting. Your lecture has enhanced my knowledge of the period. My practice is rooted in early twentieth century painting and I thoroughly enjoyed your observations.

The last painting of David's career is The Anger of Achilles, which is very famous and sums up his feelings about the Revolution and the Restoration. What kind of art historian are you?

Thanks so much for introducing me to this wonderful gallery and the work of Bice Lazzari. I went to the exhibition this week and found her work terrific and it was also a chance to view the permanent collection. As a modernist abstract painter myself I was fascinated to discover yet another modernist female artist from early times who was both inventive and innovative in some of her ideas and thoughts. Your talk on Sophie Taeuber Arp was also really informative and I saw the show at Tate Modern twice !

Thank you for talking about these two important British potters in the context of art. Would love to hear some more! However, I'm a bit puzzled by the use of this particular Thomas Toft plate to illustrate a folk pottery tradition. Yes, he was a potter whose work was aimed at moderate to low income people for everyday use, but this particular example was one of his most highly decorated, time consuming and therefore probably more expensive pieces. I've always thought of it as an 'advertising' piece, an exhibition piece, if you will, aiming at the financially high end of his audience. A piece whose intricate surface decoration overpowers the clay itself. Have I just not seen enough of his work? It's possible. I wonder, though, if a better choice might not have been an English medieval pitcher or plate - very simple, strong form, vigorous throwing and minimal glazing, all of which allowed the clay to be a major part of its expression, and certainly known and admired by Leach...?

There's lots of information on the web about pottery techniques, but little to help an amateur potter choose a direction for their work. This helps.

Hello. Thank you for so descriptive an alternate perspective on the meanings and history of such a well used square as Trafalgar. I am but an anglophile with an open mind, so I appreciate light shed into dark corners revealing the threads of history, showing what might never be understood by an outsider, and lending gravity to that discovery.

Dr. Paraskos is a wonderful lecturer about art--offers terrific historical context of each period of time addressed; full of interesting anecdotal detail not only about art but the side aspects of relevant ideas that bring fullness to understanding the art, the artist & the period covered. Bravo, Dr. Paraskos! I'm a new fan of your terrific effort here.

Wonderful & informative lecture here about Rosa Bonheur--an incredible achiever of light, realism, perspective, etc. I realize it seems to be part of the trend today to make note of someone's sexual preference in life, but, when one really examines the personal life of an artist, does it really matter when all is said & done? I think not. Let's not lose sight of the ability of Bonheur as an artist regardless of what her personal life entailed.

Hello from Japan. A very interesting "lecture." However, I would add that there was indeed a closer connection between Rie and Leach than intimated in the presentation, as well as with Hans Coper. It would be of interest were you to consider these three potters in another lecture. Thank you!
