The analogy that pops into my mind is getting the "ugly" girl from a beauty padget, like Ms. Universe. I would have the ugly ones in comparison to the gems. I know that I could never afford the top tier, but my worst would still be better than none

Started collecting when I was a teenager in the early 80's tapering off thru undergrad and grad school. I focused on vintage back then and I was fortunate enough during that time to buy many really nice cards from the 50's and 60's at shows using part-time job money. I Purchased Mays and Mantle, Williams, etc. cards that are worth hundreds now for much, much less back in the day. I bought sets each year since but only recently returned to vintage collecting. The increase in value of those vintage cards is great but that is not what drives me. The history and passion for the game is. I played fairly high level HS ball and my son did as well so that just adds to the whole love for collecting. David

Vintage is far and away the smarter buy. Modern is too overproduced. Yes there are some nice modern cards but its much safer to buy old established players. Players like the Tampa guy who i wont name are prime examples of the risk. Good video! That Maris in low grade is on my want list too.

Hey man , I’m away to buy these just starting so new to all this. When it says on the card 12/75 or something does that mean there’s only 75 of the cards made and you have the 12th card ? Might be a stupid question 😂
@AfterHoursCollector3 ай бұрын
@@lachyjames8629 not a stupid question at all! But yes, of that specific card (blue auto of whatever character) you have the 12th out of 75

@@AfterHoursCollector okay thanks much appreciated! Is there a website you can check / compare prices of the cards?

The main reason I focus of pre 80s cards is simple to me.. After that era, folks saw and kept cards in good shape as they saw them as valuable objects.. If you have a nice card from the 70s back it's a very rare item. The bottom line is for me those old cards are tough.. You will never regret owning something everyone else probably doesnt.

Great video. Thanks for the info. I'm wondering if you can help me with this 2023 Topps MJ Baseball Sketch. I can't find out who drew it. Looks like there is a Z and two, O's in the name. It's a sick sketch. Also, do you know if this is Topps Series 1 or 2. As you mentioned there is minimal info from Topps...

@@frankfitnesstcc Hi! If it’s the one online I see I have never seen that artist before. I’m assuming you didn’t pull it from a pack yourself right? Could be not from an official artist, I don’t think MJ is on the approved list of retired guys they can draw, but I can ask one of the artists and double check. It looks like series 1

When everything is premium, nothing is… modern cards are gonna fall apart longterm. What’s more rare: a card that has a 1/1, 1/5, 1/10, 1/15, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/200, 1/500, and base variant (all of which went from pack to PSA immediately) or a card that was literally just seen as a gimmick to sell gum 70 years ago, that no one thought would make them rich, that still managed a PSA 10 decades later when PSA came about?

The reason to collect vintage over modern to ultra modern is that vintage cards are tried and true. There is very little risk of losing money if you plan to hold long-term. I'm getting rid of my ultra modern for more vintage the only modern cards I'm keeping are my mid 1990's baseball and basketball inserts and key rookie cards. This ultra modern isn't going to hold any future value when vintage cards have one Maybe 2-3 rookie cards vs all these junk parallel rookie cards are numbering in the thousands for key players rookie cards. They have flooded the Market just like the junk wax with these rookie cards today. These manufacturers today do not care about the collectors they care about profit. 1979 and older are the 1000% way to collect even some 1980-1985 cards are ok anything after 1986 is shit

I look at grades as a guideline as to rarity and value, but I don’t think they tell the whole story of a card. I’ve been buying the cards I think look the best, even with creases, and I have zero regrets. Something about vintage cards with flaws makes them appear more authentic. Excellent tips, I don’t mind gambling on cheaper vintage to buy raw and hope to grade high, but I stay away from the high dollar stuff.
@AfterHoursCollector7 ай бұрын
Completely agree, I like them to not look minty either. We’ll leave the raw high dollar stuff to the other people hah

Those two Reeses you showed are fantastic cards. I liked the tip of having a range of graded cards with you when looking at raw cards in person -- a 3, a 5, a 7, etc. When you were saying that, it made me think of irons in a golf bag LOL, but almost like a golf club, you kind of need the right slab for the right comp on the spot. Great video, thanks for sharing!
