Snake and James are/were both bad people. Pretty sure James bullied Snape even before he began dating Lily. However being bullied by James does not justify Snapes actions at all. I'm seeing a lot of comments about flight and patronuses: A) A patronus form correlates to animagus form but patronus form can change if a person falls in love or undergoes trauma. It is unknown if the animagus form also changes so there is no sure assumption we make on what Snape's animagus form is based on his patronus form alone. B) Snape and Voldemort are the only two known Witches/Wizards capable of unsupported flight. Although Dumbledore or other death eaters may have been capable, it is known to be a very rare ability and never displayed by any other magical human.

It's actually explained in the story, both the movie and books why Voldemort needed the elder wand. Because Voldemort needed to Kill Harry Potter. It's shown in the first movie that the wand chooses the wizard, and any spells cast with a wand that doesn't agree with the wizard results in misfires and fizzled spells. That's still shown in the first half of Death Hollows, when Harry tries to use Hermione's wand, but it hasn't chose him, so the spells are uncontrollable. The reason Voldemort couldn't use his wand against Harry, and Vice versa, is because both their wands are essentially twins, from the phoenix feather in their cores. Both wands cancel each other out. Which was shown in Order of the Phoenix when the two clashed in the ministry of magic. The only wand in existence that doesn't choose its owner, is the Elder Wand, the strongest in existence by nature of being a Deathly Hollow. The Elder wand passes from hand to hand of the person who killed the previous owner, or duelist who disarmed the person with the elder wand. The only wand that could defeat any other.
