I tried to call, but it seems this man may no longer be with us? or a sense of humor, his answering machine says he's no longer with us. If so, Thank you to his family for allowing this to stay up and sharing that knowledge.

How do you keep the temperature of the anvil material around 400 to 600 degrees when a welding arc can be anywhere between 6500 and 10,000˙F. With Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW) at 200 amps the heat affected zone is ~2.00 inches; the longer the weld the farther out the heat gets. In most applications a 1/8" 7018 would be run around 125/130 amps. If temper is lost above 600 degrees for example then there is absolutely no way one can prevent loss of temper if repairing an anvil by welding. (I'm only speaking to 'temper' here. Thor only knows how many anvils have been successfully repaired by welding.)

Hayes work-hardening hard surface rod is the way to go. 750°f whole mass preheat to insure adequate penetration. Bulld everything up. Peen and wire brush each rod pass. Should take about an hour. Those rods like a short arc. DC positive. ¼" rods. 'Stir' the weld as you go. At about135 amps. Should take about one rod per cubic inch. They aren't cheap. About $4USD each in 2020 money. Glad it worked out for you. I lived in Selma for a few dozen years and smithed at hickory forge on Lizzie Street. Was NCABANA till I retired and moved to Cape Hatteras for 5 years. Am in Arizona now. Traded hurricanes 🌀 for heat 🔥🌡️🌵🦂⚒️ Edit: Sorry.I now see that this video posted eleven years ago. If you are still monitoring the comments, how is the anvil holding up? Praying that you and your friends and family have endured these trying times. God Bless.🙏

Keep the Raleigh wrought iron works in business. We all support this wonderful craft. If me and my wife move to North Carolina, I would like to have my own design created and made myself. I will even draw my own designs. Joe and inga.

I grew up in Brooklyn, (park slope area) off of prospect park, and there are still today many wrought iron fences in front of these brownstone houses. These fences have a combination of elaborate designs of leaves, flowers and ornate gates as well. These iron fences are the Picasso’s of all fences! You can keep your pvc and wooden junk fences, the fences they make today are all crap compared to the beautiful designs and architect of these fantastic wrought iron. Save this craft and skill, don’t let it die out , ever! Please post more videos too. Thank you!

I have been thinking of something like that for my square block anvil. once I build my second bellows, I'll take my anvil to the river one dark night. I welded a tab on there so I can hook a bar to it, to give me lifting leverage. all manpower. should be doable, its maybe 1/3 the weight of your anvil. cool to see someone else having this idea and then actually pulling it off too!

I like how you spend the time to finesse the volute curve and then to only throw them to the floor while the metal is still hot and malleable.

Wonder if wrought iron is being used, or if its mild steel ? . Id imagine wrought would be way more expensive. My hunch is that its mild steel

I have a wrought iron table that was stored in a damp place for several years & has become somewhat discolored. I'm wondering if there is any way to bring it back to its original black colored finish, without painting it? I love the piece & it is a work of art!
