This Fauré work has never sounded better. Bravo to these fine artists!

Subliminal !

These performances of Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G Minor (Opus 57) and Brahms Piano Quintet in F Minor (Opus 34) are absolutely wonderful. I thank the La Jolla Music Society and those truly excellent performers (and especially Miss Porter) for providing such moving and exciting renditions. While I’m extremely grateful that we all get to watch this “Open Rehearsal” (it’s really an actual concert) on KZbin as often as we wish, there will never be anything as good as a LIVE performance, and I’m here to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the actual show, and apparently so did the entire audience. For all those of you who live reasonably close to La Jolla (not me, I have a 3 hour drive each way), I highly recommend that you attend as many of the La Jolla Music Society’s concerts as possible. You will definitely be glad you did! Thanks again to LJMS (and everyone involved) for this extremely generous freebie. And oh, it would be nice if photography was allowed while the performers are taking their bows.

The musicians are amazing and their playing is obviously fantastic! But whoever the sound engineer/mixer is NEEDS TO BE FIRED OR GET MORE TRAINING, bc the audio and dynamic range of this recording is crazy disappointing. The forte/frenetic moments are 1000% not as exciting as they should be, they basically sound like they're all playing with mutes during those moments, as if playing at mezzo-forte levels compared to in their softest dynamics. Plus I hear almost no resonance in their sound throughout. Just listen to other chamber recordings and you can hear the difference. I even played this on my tv which has great speakers. Some vital energy and resonance in the sound is missing here, and doesn't match with what you see visually. CLEARLY THIS IS A SOUND RECORDING ISSUE. It makes the whole performance super underwhelming, even though you just know it would have sounded amazing in person, or at least on a recording with a sound engineer who knows what tf they're doing...

Pure Copland, pure Americana. So much said with the simplest of harmonies. What an amazing performance.

I agree...This is absolutely mesmerising and uniquely brilliant. In the 3rd movement ther cello players face as he grins almost like he's keeping on as he knows the end is close like the players on the titanic or the 51st battalion' By the 4th movement you are practically snake-charmed so much by the billions of beautiful descents that your peristalsis almost starts working in reverse. This is so lyrical and memorable and yet still challenging and hold in you're attention for the entire piece. Wow. Im amazed im still so amazed by a piece of music and how its can give me feelings or paint pictures that I can barley imagine myself. Thanks to all involved in bring this to us!

This chamber performance is a revelation. Like the original string sextet version of Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night". Beautiful, intimate, expert playing from the heart. Stunningly well microphoned too. Is there anything you gals and guys at La Jolla Music Society don't do to perfection? 🤣🥰😘 Thank you with much love, Andréa

Excellent. You added an additional player. Copland, in his 1973 recording, added two extra violins to make their sound more robust.

Brahms always is always a bop. Clive is also the GOAT of chamber music. Studied his masterclasses with Tortelier when I was in school. And his time with Tokyo String Quartet and even got a chance to have a few masterclasses with them. Truly a blessing. Thank you for the recording.
