Handel at his best. The aria emphasizes that Christ is at the “right hand of God.” What does that indicate? Well it looks as if Handel had a handle on the Gospel. The Bible affords us the record of the fall into sin of our first parents. This was immediately followed by the promise of a Redeemer, Genesis 3:15. And true to that promise we read in Scripture that “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures”; but that is not the end of it. The Christ who died “for us” now appears in heaven “for us” Hebrews 9:24. The apostle Paul in Romans chapter 8 asks what we hear in this aria, “If God be for us who can be against us?” And “”Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?” See Romans 8:31-34. Alas, if God be for us everything against us is reduced to a nameless and faceless who.
