Inverted WB is the role that has the fullback invert into midfield. Inverted FB is the role that makes them become a 3rd CB in posession.

I would call that formation a narrow diamond 4-4-2

Tweaking tactics is generally bad. It lowers familiarity which leads to worse performances. I just work on 3 tactics, all 5-3-2 narrow possession based. My 3 tactics are normal, attacking and defensive but I find I hardly ever need to swap from normal during games. Also never have a grey position on your tactics which forces whoever you put there to play whatever you have. It's time consuming but I personalise every single player I have to what they play as best. This means if i sign a midfielder I look at his stats and decide what his best role is and then go to my 3 tactics and personalise him in all 9 central midfield roles accross the 3 tactics. This way I can bring on a box-box midfielder for a deep lying playmaker exetera and they all have familiarity. Same with strikers. You can also tweak each one, some maybe bad at dribbling or shooting from distance so you stop them doing it. It's time consuming but it is the best way.

I've just started a save with Ilkley in the tier 10 added database. There was literally nobody at the club except me and the chairman. Had to head hunt one coach then used his advice for the rest of my staff and squad as I don't like searching, I like to use the scouts etc. But given I had no staff and no players I invited every Part English, Above 6ft, based in England player on the list to trial for a month. Then by the end of preseason I had a decent squad and the best staff in the league (easy to do at tier 10). Our best player moved to Spanish 4th tier within a month, he was formerly of Watford academy. The rest, though, are pretty much exactly the players from that first trial batch and no ridiculous appearance fees. The most basic of clean slate flat narrow 433 which in the post match media review is named as "wing play" despite having no wingers. Knocked out the Vase to Bury! but through to Quarters in the North West League Cup. For this tier (or any below van north/south) anything above a 9 in attribute is amazing, in vanarama ill look for maybe 10-11, championship i'd want 14, prem I go for 16+

this kind of micro management is what makes a good team great. i always like to have a centre back who is good at marking, tackling, anticipation, positioning and concentration too and have them man mark the opponents striker if they're on fire. it can be the difference between them scoring a hat trick and not getting a sniff on goal.
