Not just submarines, surface ships also use hull mounted sonar; could be for fishing boats finding fish, salvage boats finding wreckage, mine hunters finding mines or war ships finding submerged threats including subs.

Explained like in-put guid for studying so clearly in moder days! Than you! It means a lot lika a way how to know sonar. Sonar utilizes waves in the water to locate underwater obstaclrs, such as sea mines or submarines. But for me has big roll in communication in navigation because it can travel though liquides and solid as well with water being a better conductor of sound than air. This facts bring me a lot-how to rise the concept of sonar which stand for sound navigation and ranging. Because if we research we must know essential elements of sonar as well as echo and all kind of waves. Than you for give essential meaning. 😊

Military submarines mainly use passive sonar because active sonar would give away their position.

I don't think it's really the sound that kills, bit the force of which a wave is applying to one's body. When using active sonar, a submarine will produce a very forceful wave that is accompanied with the sound of an emitter; this wave travels with so much force, because water is way heavier than air. The sound may only leave you with a ruptured eardrums, but being too close to the emitter would be the same as standing next to a an explosive detonation; minus the fire and heat. This kind of sonar is used on vast stretches of open ocean, or when someone wants to show borders, the hard way, why they call the depths "Davy Jones's Locker."

Is a "Passive Sonar" the same as a Hydrophone?
@MentorAnimations3 жыл бұрын
Passive sonar is created using hydrophones. It is the listening device used to detect things under water
