It was a toss-up really on this one and a Epiphone USA Casino. I went with a USA Epiphone instead. There was no stock of the Loar, I did tell myself I wanted a guitar that day on my way to the shop on the train. No regrets as the Casino does sound really sweet fitted with White Bronze Stirngs. I still have some room in my small guitar collection, with sounds like that next time :-)

@@marccarter1350 I had also given up trying to find a Loar, but then this just popped up on eBay - 2nd hand but as new. It's a delight to play. I've never tried a Casino but hope I can try one out some day.

A great arrangement, played nicely with bluesy slides and vibrato! Did you write the sheet music/tab yourself? There are some parts, that you play differently to what's notated. For example, in measure 4 of the minor part(0:38, 0:56), you repeat the open a-string instead of f# and e flat on the d-string as it is notated. Jazz and blues have been passed by ear, but for players coming from a classical backgrounnd, it would be nice, if they could study your beautiful arrangements without watching the video at half speed, trying to figure out, how you really do it. 🙂🙃😊
@hughboyde8 ай бұрын
I'm glad you liked the arrangement! and apologies for any discrepancies with the written part. I do tend to play quite freely, and lots of things can happen (or not happen) in the heat of the moment. My main reason for writing down the arrangements is so that I can remember them when I come back to them later, so please regard them as a road map rather than an exact score.

What should a beginner work on first to play this piece?? I play it on the piano but now I’m learning the mandolin & want to play it on that!
@hughboyde8 ай бұрын
I'm glad you liked it. I think the first step for a beginner mandolinist would be to just play the bare melody, without the harmony notes - perhaps accompanied by guitar? Playing both melody and harmony at the same time on the mandolin can be quite tricky and involves a lot of complex moves with both hands. It might be a good idea to try some similar but simpler pieces first, which have melody accompanied with mostly open strings. I've got a playlist based on a book called First Images which has some ideas that you might like and which might help you get started studio.kzbin.infoPLLBhcMKpJn7FV0061VkoCcroadU0SqYdn/edit

is there a second mandolim partiture?
@hughboyde8 ай бұрын
You mean so you could play it as a duet? It would certainly be possible to arrange the piece in this way (let me know if you would like me to do this) but I have nothing ready-made to offer I'm afraid. The pieces in First Images were all designed as unaccompanied solos, so that is how they appear in the book.

What a beautiful arrangement! Thinking of a BR40T to get my feet wet in the world of Tenor guitar. Played an old Martin tenor years ago, and would love to have one. Seems that this model is the way to go. Wonder what your thoughts are, as a player who seems to own many high quality instruments?
@hughboyde8 ай бұрын
I'm not any kind of expert in tenor guitars, but I'm certainly very pleased with the Blueridge! Mine was under £500 new a couple of years ago, and at that price I can't fault it. I did previously have an old Martin tenor on loan for a few months. It was lovely for parlour playing, but the sound was very light and small and it had difficulty cutting through in a band situation.
