Very happy to come across this clip of George. He was a legend. The party fishing that week was that of Mr William Murray who if I remember correctly was a retired solicitor from the Glasgow area. Mr Murray is briefly featured sitting on the bench, with myself seated on the ground. Other members of the party I remember were, William Bowie, seated on the bench talking to the lady and Sir Robin Mcpherson on the far bank fishing with George. It was great time and and an honour to have known George and having been able to fish with him and listen to his stories. He was a true gentleman. They dont make them like that anymore. When George passed away we uplifted a large stone from the Junction Pool which George used to sit on and placed it at the head of Michaels Cast, a run George liked to fish and named after him. There was a plaque put on it in his memory. I would like to think its still there.

In June, 2022 a 12 year old set fire to the hiouse which had to be demolished. By that time the river had reached the frront of the house. The river has taken out most of the trees upostream of the house and is slowly eroding westwards behind what was Ross House. Further footage of the area and Garmouth along with Kingston beach can be found by sesrching KZbin for ICC Kingstaon and ICC Garmouth and Kingston. The Speymouth Environmmental Partnership has been formed to rasie money to guide the river back to its pre 2000 course. If not done Lower Grmouth is in in severe danger of being washed away by the river. 14.03.2023

Hi--thanks for sharing this. My great-grand-parents and their children lived here. An O/S 1870 map names the location "Mills of Garmouth." An O/S 1977 map says "Ross House." The location has a history of fires and flooding. My research describes the location: Meal mill and mill croft - 1848. Flour mill. Woolen manufactory, weaving house, warehouse (fire 1861). Farm steading - Queenshaugh (fire 1900). Then rebuilt again. I was in the house once in the 1990s.

It’s only a couple metres away from the bank of the river now maybe less as I went to see it yesterday, will probably be knocked down soon I reckon as they won’t let it fall in the river, just my guess though

The recent videos of this house i think will show just how close it is from collapsing into the river,It looks like a few more spates and the river will flow round the back and straight through the golf course but !!!.I dont think the council or sepa care if it falls into the river.

Sorry about the typo Below, I meant , “and now of course we have fish farms.....”

It’s really quiet surprising anyone is surprised there were and still are no fish, they were hunted to a extinction , masses and masses of coastal nets, drift nets at sea, nets in the lower river. And then I have to say as an angler myself , far t9 much rod pressure , and until quiet recently everything was killed. Before the Second World War few people fished for salmon, by the 1960s and 1970s beat were split up and more and more fishers came as there was more money about. The sport went from a gentleman’s pursuit, or the pastime of a few people of modest means to far more anglers. And now of course we have fish far,s and climate change (I am not sure about the latter contribution but I am told it’s an issue). On a personal note, I don’t like catch and release, it knackers the fish and if there are not enough to take a few I think we should stop fishing them. I won’t be popular with other anglers for saying that.

Hi David, Thanks for your insights. I did Ghillie with my Father now and again when I was younger but I do remember, one night, never wanting to priest another fish. I never did again. That was about 50 years ago. I know that the "industry" supported some families but I took a terrible dislike to the green wellie and Range Rover brigade.
@davidgray33214 жыл бұрын
@@GlenAffaric Hi Glen glad to hear from you, are you still in Scotland? I still fly fish but for trout, you can get them in fast and release them very quickly. I think if we had enough salmon it would be ok to take a few and then stop fishing, it’s the excess that isn’t good. At the moment they are best left alone. It would be great if we could get rid of those salmon farms though, also a problem in Norway and British Columbia.

@@davidgray3321 Hi David, Yes, I still live just 5 miles from where my Dad worked. I went in to the motor trade and then, for the last 26 years, I worked as a distillery engineer. I suspect that catch and release with barbless hooks has annoyed many. I have to "sit on the fence" as regards this "industry". Best regards. Duncan.

@@GlenAffaric Hi, yes I realise it’s important to be diplomatic, my parents were from Helensburgh, my great grandfather Murdo MacDonald was from Muir of Ord, he ran away to join the army, swam across the Caledonian canal, ended up in the Scots guards and The royal Scots, was a pipe major. Fought in three campaigns , Sudan , Boer war, and his last one WW1 in France. His luck ran out aged 54 in France, quiet an age to be on active service. Also thought the Royal family Highland dancing, all very non PC these days! The Scots were all over the empire as I am sure you know, the Historian Nial Ferguson writes about it in his books, since he is also from Scotland. Small country with a big history. I married a Canadian, with a Scottish mother , we have a son called Hamish. Live 50 miles north of London.

My father George Wallace Ross his brother Christopher Ross and their sister Jan McAulay Ross were brought up in Aberlour Orphanage after their Mother died in 1924 she was 36 years old. They were at the orphanage for eight years before moving close to Keith to live on a farm with Peter McCandy at Boharm. This drone photography gives me an inset into the area where they spent their childhood. I hope to visit the area this year 2017 and see the beautiful landscape that these scenes show us all. I was brought up in Montgarrie in Aberdeenshire and love my Scottish roots. I have left the UK and live in Thailand now another beautiful country.

Hi there, Word Reet, I`m afraid that the Seagull and all my kit is sitting in my shed and has been for a couple of years. I have had another stroke. It is just like having my brains filing cabinet kicked over and having to re-set everything. Annoying or what? You are brave! This is my third Seagull! Video taker, John also has a Seagull. We had a mid air collision and trashed both!! You would not believe it was possible. Formation is fun but expensive! I now have some great balsa skills. Enjoy.
