Surfing is no longer a lifestyle it's big business, the heart has been ripped out.

Back in the day Noosa was the spot, Gods country, then came commercial business and turned a lifestyle into profit, ripping out the heart of surfing.

Back in the day when you had to paddle out the back and not walk on the other surfers, co mmercial surfing and the big money sponsors have ruined true spirit free surfing. Personally I hate what surfing has become.

Yep 1974 I was 20 and still surfing today 2025. Riding a 7’8” Coral Reefer Quad fin Gun by Mitchell Rae shaper of Outer Island Surfboards Australia. Surfing is not like the 70’s today better equipment more crowds 🥴 But if you search you will find UNCROWDED waves sooner than later. Travel!!!

Looks like they drove from Margaret River through Manjimup to Denmark then on to Esperance. The film ends east of Esperance. No idea what the bloke at the start of the video was going on about, east to west. They were travelling west to east. You can ALMOST guarantee that the next part of the film will be cactus SA.

All the more impressive when considering the crap board design of the time.
@PaulHandley-i7l5 күн бұрын
What do you mean by crap design? They were designed to go with the flow of the wave which they did perfectly.
@Rex-l2t5 күн бұрын
@ I started surfing as a kid in 1970 and I can tell you from experience they were crap. A kid today on a modern board would out perform the best in the world from that era.

Best time for surfing anywhere in the planet, 70s 80s, like here in Brasil we discovered so many new peaks. I have been in Hawaii in 76 and got a Lightining Bolt surfbord from Gerry Lopez and Rory Russell at their shop in Ala Moana, great time. Thanks 4 sharing 🏄🏽💙

Spent winter of 75 at Margaret’s ,first BIG swell to arrive everyone was on the cliffs just watching .Out paddles Ian cairns in board shorts,very big cluttered lineup ,no one joined him until a knee boarder paddled out,everyone wondering who it was,still no one else went out.they battled the conditions and both got some big waves and some big cleanups,when they finally came in the big mystery was solved,the knee boarder was Shane Gould……legendary

Great film, thank you! It takes me back to the days of my youth. A time when legropes were non-existent and precision surfing was key to avoid long swims. We learned quick in those times, [how to NOT lose your board.]

Yes indeed. I started somewhere between 71-73 in Florida. No leash days...I do remember. I think it helped keep the lineups thinned out too. This vid very nice. Miss that period. Less crowded, less expensive. Cleaner....etc
