Chests only are unusable if there's a full block above them meaning with a half slab it can be used and in this case, they used a trapdoor which also does not block the chest

@@copper_maus8953 If you hold shift and place while looking at the chest at a perfect angle you get to make a double chest which has more room than a barrel
