Connor’s coaching Mac would have lasted 30 seconds. Both with huge egos and personalities. Do it this way Mac. No! I’m doing it like this! No Mac, try it like this. To hell with this! Storms off… haha!

Other than Djokavic and Nadal I couldn't name any other current tennis player. 40 years ago the contrasting styles of the 'Big 3' Borg Connors and McEnroe made it so great to follow but those days are over. Nothing great lasts forever and not much interest in the game.

Mcenroe, like he could at times, looked a touch fat here. He was never really a slave to the gym! He did actually look a bit more like the old Mac at this tournament, but unfortunately came up against a Lendl in his absolute prime in the quarters

This felt more like a threapy session than an interview. This was great stuff. McEnroe was always good with the media, win or lose.

Tanner was very underestimated. He was way faster than he looked. His backhand was amazing. Great volleys, a good hard flat forehand with his continental grip and of course the Tanner serve. Tanner was hitting serves 150 mph long before modern racket tech was invented.

I remember the men's doubles final. It started as an incredible match and it ended as a joke. All of the first 3 sets went to tiebreakers. They were tied at 1 set each. While in the third set tiebreaker, a ball screamed past the long hair of Ken Flach. The Frenchmen thought the ball hit Flach's hair, so it would be their point. I'm not sure whether or not it hit his hair, and Flach said he wasn't sure either. The referee ruled in favor of Flach and Seguso. Flach and Seguso won the 3rd set. Afterwards, the Frenchmen gave up and lost the 4th set 6-0. Completely inexcusable that the Frenchmen just quit.

Interestingly, McEnroe DID do much better at the US Open. Unseeded, he plowed into the semis and only lost because he ran into Sampras, the eventual winner.

What hurt both Connors and McEnroe was mainly Ivan Lendl coming into his prime and dominating Tennis.

I hadnt realised that Judy Nelson was around 11 years older than Martina, or perhaps some of the dynamics of her relationship with Judy, until I read this famously scathing criticism Camille Paglia wrote about Martina in the 90s: "It began with my disillusion with Martina Navratilova, the darling of the lesbian world, who used to symbolize for me the athletic new militance of my generation of feminists. Her rival, Chris Evert, was the nice Catholic girl, the goody- two-shoes whom I loathed, since she was everything we who were reared in the Fifties were expected to be. However, I came to see that Chris is the stronger of the two - that Martina has a childish streak and that that childishness is inextricable from her lesbianism. At key moments in important matches, Martina would glance up toward the stands and shrug or grin shamefacedly at Judy Nelson, her mature blonde lover, who was nodding and clapping like a hovering kindergarten teacher. It drove me crazy. Why did the premier Amazon of our time need a substitute mother figure? When things went wrong, Martina couldn't conceal her self-pity; the mask of strength would crumble, and she'd storm around the court in a snit. Meanwhile, Chris Evert never threw a tantrum, groused at opponents, or blamed officials. A bad call produced a steely stare, at most. Chris behaved like an adult, taking full responsibility for her performance and deportment. Classy Chris Evert is a better role model for young women than Martina, whose hyperdeveloped masculine musculature is overcom- pensation for her creampuff interior."

As a Brit now, I prefer the AO & USO slams to Wimbledon now. Why? I only ever saw Queens & Wimbledon on TV the other Slams weren't covered unlike the golf for some reason. Wimbledon has become an anachronism, so in love with itself that the tennis comes second. The Slams above are just about the tennis & I prefer it now. 2023 Wimb was dire apart from Andy's 2nd match. Even the final, despite being 5 sets, never really got going for me. I started watching in 1970 & took me an eternity to understand the rules, 'juice'?😊 I'd like to see only one serve, the first is only about getting an ace, most 2nd serves go over the net unlike the 1st, so why do it.
