Wow that's super scary... and very lucky. 2 that deep and everyone was (mostly) ok!?! Almost unbelievable, they should buy some lotto tickets cause they both already just won the life lotto.

What a strange thing to think. The people I know that do avalanche related activities love life more than most, they devote huge amounts of time and effort learning to do it safely. Loving something dangerous isn't for everyone, doesn't mean they welcome death, it's ok if you don't get it.

We went up to Blind Bull the same day you headed up Squaw. Given the instability on Squaw Creek roadcut we were very concerned about the roadcut a few hundred feet below the warming hut. Fortunately nothing was moving up there, but up top it was a little too deep to fool around without turbskis.

I did my backcountry skiing back in the early-mid 80's pretty much in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons. We didn't have anything like this. It was pretty much a combination of your experience, judgment, knowledge and risk/reward. We used to think if you had ski cut twice, it was good to go. Or in questionable areas, ski close to the trees or in them. To a degree that was reasonable, but with todays availability of info take advantage of it. This stuff is excellent. I'm sure there will still be some fatalities and a lot of close calls; but that is the nature of what you are dealing with, skier or snowmobliler.

If they are riding snow machines in the wilderness knowingly, good luck trying to teach them anything about doing the right thing.

I've been riding in the Tetons for 12 years, every year so i am starting to get an understanding of snow science over the last few years. If you guys need someone to help let me know!

It would be helpful if the Bridger Teton Avalanche Center would post more observational videos like this. The website is great, but I think people would really appreciate more data, and observations from the Avy center. I see other Avy centers like Utah, and Montana posting KZbin videos all the time

Jay was a very nice individual. He hired me on as a work study assistant to help his grad students back in 2010-2011. Sorry to hear about his passing.

Thank you so much. We Laramigos finally have some resource that doesn't rely on Colorado front range data.

Scary how you can go from one of the very the best moments of your life to the very worse. Pay attention to avalanche warnings and ski in-bounds. Wear a beacon and a float to improve survivability.

Would his airbag have worked under this thick but small slide when the snow never really had a chance to "fluff up" or "liquefy"???

May I ask why your PST was isolated 130cm upslope when your layer of concern was only 70cm deep?
