Within 20 years of this being broadcast the whole industry was gone with a 10-15 year halt to herring fishing as the North Sea and the Atlantic waters of NW Scotland were fished out and the stocks needed to recover. Even now the quotas are 1/10th or less of what was taken then.

Is that a real place. The buildings at the beginning look like a plastic world. An airy fairy world built by us. To take away the damp, diseased cruel world as it in its natural nature. The world's full of zombies. What do you think the world will be like in say 50 years time. Would be scary if I came back now. Phone boxes, black and white TVs. Around 50 years ago. Would be like a miracle to someone who came back that died at that time. A phone that does everything you want. The size of a watch. I reckon those virtual reality headphones will get so advanced soon you wouldn't need to ever go out the door. Life is a nightmare to me anyway. Hard to live in a world where nothing makes sense. Unless you enjoy a good night out in the pub or a booze holiday of forget it. Or something stronger.

Buckley had such a unique style. A great ability to tell stories. Beat poetry without the pretence. Just simple stories told well. For those wondering the story is about a man who can lie his way out of anything. Who stole from the Maharaja but is caught and facing certain death. His position seems doomed. Expect he plays on the paranoia of the Maharaja and tells him his lords and ladies are greedy and self serving and are plotting against him. He gaslights the Maharaja, playing on the fact the rich and elite are of course self serving and greedy. If the plot to kill the maharaja is true or not doesn’t matter. The man plays on the maharajas fears and weaves truth into a lie to save his own neck. If the maharaja kills the man he may never know the truth of the plot and will be racked by paranoia and fear. He like the kid caught taking cookies that makes you laugh when you should be mad. A brilliant fable.

It’s funny you should say that, as The Scaffold are actually long due a box set of their work, if nothing else! There’s little bits of poetry scattered throughout their work, and there’s also the McGough & McGear album, which along with the McGough solo album ‘Summer With Monika’, still leaves one with very little out there. Any more answers would be appreciated!

The original ballad was called Four People - the four informants. However MacColl and Seeger were not happy with the exclusion of contents from their informants. So they rewrote the ballad and it became The Body Blow. There is however a film version called Four People. It is available from the BFI Shop as a dvd Shadows of Progress.
