Ross, this was so beautifully done and so sad to see that so many of our classmates and friends have left this world. I was Sue Davis back in my school days. Had to change my name to join unions and then got married and kept that name too. This left me in tears. So many people I knew and cared about. Thank you for your beautiful memory.

Thank you. I hate the thought of all these classmates just fading away and wanted to keep their memory alive.

All these years I’ve wondered. Seems like Lujack to play it for maximum effect. New question. How do you know the reason?

Where is the location of the accident? The article mentions Virginia State Route 20, but which part?
@JRossHunter6 ай бұрын
West of Orange about half way to Montpelier Station. It's on the right as you go west. There's a historical marker with a place to pull off and read it.

Nice catch from 85. I wish I heard more K5LA’s like that in person, but typical 2023 doesn’t have many of those. One’s CSX and NS have don’t sound the same.

Thanks. As I might have written elsewhere, this was not a planned video. A few railman's ventured into West Virginia for a day of train watching. Only later did I realize the footage could be edited into something coherent. We had just one camera and VHS was all we had. Technically, it would be much better today, but the subject material is gone.

The early SD-50’s were notoriously bad runners for Chessie. They tried several different remedies. Mostly it stemmed from EMD using an obsolete prime mover. Once the SD-60 came around, EMD got it right.

Norfolk & Western Class A 1218 wouldn’t have struggled getting up and over Christiansburg Mountain if the train had a diesel helper. The dynamic brakes from the diesel will prevent the 1218 from slipping.

Very enjoyable to see footage of N&W 1218 in operation back in the late 1980s, it's a shame that 1218's excursion career was so short (1987-1991). I wouldn't mind seeing the 1218 return to operation in the future but I understand that the chance of this happening is extremely slim, at least this engine is preserved at the transportation museum in Roanoke,VA.

A kind of familiar whistle quill. I’d bet we’ve heard this engineer’s whistle quilling in original N&W footage from the 40’s-50’s

The way the engineer got her to lift that big, static load on those wet rails, after all that wheel slip (which he did a great job of minimising) & then, within a few seconds she was eating that hill up again, like she hadn’t stopped... what an engineer & what(!) a loco!! Anyone know who the engineer was? Great video & incredible audio; thank you!

Thank you for this documentary that totally supports my memories of OCHS while I was there as a student from 1965 to 1970. I can tell you that we were blessed to experience integration as we did. I taught school in Danville, VA from 1974 to 2010. When I moved to Danville and heard their sad and disturbing integration stories, I was shocked.The racial tensions there were quite palpable when I started teaching and continued to be felt in one way or another up to my retirement.
