Good stuff. Stepping drills, structure and keeping the line correct but tight. You can’t spend enough time on these fundamentals.

@Sifu Cliff i would like to ask, is it possible to use bong sao against a swinging overhead right hand? What is the best defense and counter against a swinging overhead right hand?
@havantwingchunuk Жыл бұрын
Hi this is Jim from HVT. Sifu Cliff is my teacher and this clip was from one of his UK visits. My personal answer would be a simple no. Bong Sau has specific distance and contact requirements to make effective. Sifu Cliff has his own channel so please go to subscribe and ask him personally. Thanks for watching

Hi there. In this video I am pulling my punches, barely even hitting. Would never want to hurt my students unless it was an accident! However, even when pulling your shots, there is an element of impact that you cannot allow for, hence my student falling back. Tbh this was just a silly video highlighting the fact that we have to keep things super simple for them to work. Cheers for your input.

I do a lot of pressure testing of Wing Chun and bong sao is one of my favorite effective techniques when sparring against my muay thai and boxing nemeses. I find it works best at longer range than this instructor is showing because at close range a full cross or power jab is going to be too fast to bong and pivot, so it tends to come straight through too easily and you get popped before you can position right. But from longer range it's easier to time a straight shot and deflect with your bong off to the blind side with a simultaneous straight shot down the middle. It's a combo that throws a lot of boxers and MT guys off because they're not used to the simultaneous attack and defense.
@havantwingchunuk2 жыл бұрын
I understand your point of view but this is not how the Bong sau is used in our system. We would certainly not use a Bong sau against a jab. In our system we have three Bong sau. Piu Bong Sau, Pau Bong sau and Dai Bong sau, all have different applications. What Sifu is showing here is not application, it is a simple drill. If you have footage of your use of Bong sau i would be interested in seeing it. I can also do a lengthy video on Bong sau or even how in our system we would deal with a jab. Which to be honest is not a common attack when it comes to reality based self protection. Take care.
@channel-nv9xc2 жыл бұрын
@@havantwingchunuk totally understood. I appreciate and respect all of my WT/VT/WC cousins and it's good to share our similarities and differences. My system prefers a simplified bong sao that is mainly dictated by range control, angles and footwork since simplicity tends to withstand pressure testing well. But I'm always looking for new perspectives and new things to try in sparring so I thank you for sharing this.
@channel-nv9xc2 жыл бұрын
I've been studying wing Chun for 20 years, since I was a child. I started taking muay thai about six months ago, not because I felt I had to learn it but because it was a good opportunity to pressure test my wing chun in real sparring against real fighters. Some things didn't work great but a lot did and I'm grateful for it.

Great vid. Have been messing around the last few months training Wing Chun on my own, books, vids and picked up a Mok Jung also/ enjoying all of it. That being said; I dont want to come off wrong or arrogant or giving the impression of putting a style down.... so here it goes. Just a quick backstory , I have mainly trained in Kempo (a whole other can of worms i wont open) /mixed good and bad, and also about a year of BJJ a few years back. After looking at websites of local Wing Chun dojos near me/ there picks/videos (in there studios), I seem to be getting the impression that alot of Wing Chun dojos do no sparring/(pressure testing) wondering if thats true? I am NOT looking to get into any full contact or even train for competition; that being said, training at a dojo that dosen't do any sparring is a no go for me/nothing wrong with that-just not for me. Just with my history, and its one of the things I really enjoy about martial arts (when i've trained previously). Anyway any feed back would be welcome coming from anyone with years of experience in the art. Best of luck, -Cheers
@havantwingchunuk2 жыл бұрын
It depends on your definition of sparring. I believe that if you are teaching for self defence purposes than sparring can be derogatory. Ask any "combatives" teacher and they will say the same. This is down to mindset. And the "sparring" or even "fighting" mindset is not what is needed for good self-protection, it needs to be more asymmetric than that. So in our class we will pressure test using scenario training ONLY if the student wants to. We will also do lots of movement and positioning drills to enhance our wing chun skill. You have to remember that some people train martial arts just for fun and there's nothing wrong with this. MA should be for everyone, not just those that want to become an elite fighter. Leave this for MMA and Boxing. I am not against sparring if the goal is to become a better fighter. This is not the goal of myself or my students. Peace.
@channel-nv9xc2 жыл бұрын
@@havantwingchunuk I agree. I think it's shortsighted to say a martial art is only effective if it can be used in combat. That's not the only motivation for martial arts and the average person will go their whole life without ever throwing or taking a punch in anger. So the most effective martial art is one that enhances your life. Does it make you stronger? Faster? Does it build a community for you? Does it drop your blood pressure? Improve your heart health? Then it's effective, even if you can't use it in an Octagon or in the extremely unlikely scenario that you'll find yourself in a fight with a BJJ expert. That said, if someone asked me for a recommendation for a school and they told me their primary goal is self-defense or combat, I would only recommend a school that did liberal amounts of pressure testing/sparring. That is to say, unscripted or lightly scripted exercises against an actively resisting partner where you don't necessarily know what's coming. It's the only way you can develop the real-time decision tree your body and mind have to use to determine what technique to apply when against an opponent when you have no idea what they're going to do. That decision tree development is key and has to be trained like any other technique if it's to be relied upon in a high stress real life scenario.
@havantwingchunuk2 жыл бұрын
@@channel-nv9xc Yep, totally with you on that. If someone contacts me saying that they only want to study self protection/combatives then I point the in the direction of Urban Combatives. Lee and his team are simply the best at that stuff. I would say our classes do 80% wing chun 15% self protection and 5% fighting. Cheers.

@@havantwingchunuk stop lifting your elbow you will smash your shoulder and stop turning away from your axis padawan. You sell and give you balance to you apponant. This is the soft way. Lift creates downwards pressure from your training partner wich makes you struckture stiff, this makes you easy to manipulate. Bong does not exist!

Not me in the video but my teacher (Sifu Cliff Au Yeung) and one of my students. As much as I like Star Wars and honour the Jedi, I will stick to what my teacher Sifu Cliff Au Yeung who trained under Wong Shun Leung has taught me. In my 18 years of training and teaching Wing Chun I have seen so many interpretations of this wonderful system. Best just to learn from your own teacher and make what they teach you work in the arena of your chosing. May the Force Be With You.

@florisvanlingen2 жыл бұрын
I agree that his facing could be a bit better but we are humans and tend to make mistakes. The focus in this video was the use of gon sao. Gon sao, pak sao et cetera ar just names and they don't define the movement or use in finer details, pak sao just means slapping hand/lower arm. In wing-chun you have this saying: "Loi Lau hoi sung lat sao jik chung", which describes the essence of wing chun. Foreward intent is a part of this but don't neglect receive what comes. Pak sao can be done foreward in certain situations but as a counter you will push yourself back or struggle to get the opponents punch out of the line. This breaks the receive what comes aspect. Like what is explained in this video as Gon sao is more of a sideward/back sweeping action which is much more effective for getting a punch out of the line. Foreward intent is a term many throw around without being able to actually properly appy it and not chase hands.

Stop using your hands. Hip elbow connection, not hand shoulder. Stop taking your body backwards you sell your balance under pressure. Your hands are to high. Its to easy to break down. Your bong wil smash your shoulders under pressure. It will make you stiff and easy to control. Going down in your kness collapses that structure i can see you do not have.
