Unfortunately, the video begins about a minute into the presentation. All that is missed is my introduction of myself and the class activity that compelled me to make the presentation. A two-page spread in the local newspaper of hundreds of Spanish test takers (on screen at the start) all vying for a limited number of new positions in the Spanish Post Office.

This is a feedback from my colleague Mr. Anthony Martin: Thanks for sharing your TESOL Arabia presentation via: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZnMZX-ebNhqf80 What struck me initially was this: “Learner autonomy is multi-faceted…and there is no valid…reliable tool to measure it.” This is how I feel about most things. Such complexity! What often purports to be concluded from reliable data…is just noise because so many unseen variables are at play. Our own human arrogance seduces us into thinking that we know much more than we actually do. I also enjoyed the anecdote involving what one of Brené Brown’s research professors said to her in the first year of her doctoral studies: “If you can’t measure it, it doesn’t exist.” Although this is witty, I disagree…for there are myriad phenomena that have yet to be detected by our severely-limited senses and tools. In Brené Brown’s June 2010 TEDxHouston talk, The Power of Vulnerability, she said, “I could not believe I had pledged allegiance to research, where…the definition of research is to control and predict, to study phenomena for the explicit reason to control and predict. And now my mission to control and predict had turned up the answer that the way to live is with vulnerability and to stop controlling and predicting.” So profound! Here is the URL to the talk although I bet you’re already familiar with it: www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_the_power_of_vulnerability/transcript?language=en Brown’s shift in focus from a kind of scientific coldness to a humbling embrace of human frailty is a real breath of fresh air. Also, there were four other ideas from your presentation that were worth remembering from my graduate studies that concluded so long ago, way back in 1996. These are important not to forget: Inquiry-based Learning is influenced by Constructivist Theory whereby a learner constructs knowledge through experience. An autonomous learner chooses his own purpose for learning along with materials and ways of assessing success. A learner’s metacognitive skills allow him to step back and think about both what he knows and doesn’t yet know. A self-aware learner possesses emotional intelligence if he can manage relationships with others. So, thanks for your own deep thoughts…and those of others. Sincerely, Anthony
