Kampala looks a lot better without a lot of traffic imagine the development they could’ve made in those 2 to 3 years with that low of a traffic and without the boda bodas and taxis there are too many

African government's have refused to develop because of greedy leaders and complacent urban administrators who see nothing wrong with the status quo and frustrate developers with red tape and bribes. I am glad Kampala is used as an example because I am a Ugandan by descent but living in the diaspora. If you compare the cities where I live with Kampala, you really see how far behind we are in Uganda with city planning. You look at the boda boda menace alone in Kampala which other African cities don't have and you wonder why such modes of transport are allowed in the CBD.

Generally, cities in Southern parts of Africa have a defined, visible pattern made of inter connected grid. Joburg, Windhoek, Harare, Lusaka, Bulawayo, Durban are relatively well organised compared to their counterparts in East and West Africa
@eliasejulu52182 ай бұрын
kumbe you have been having the same minds like mind also. Bro i think we have no real physical planners in Uganda and Afrina at large. Remember even so-called curved cities also will remain the same. There nobody who has come up with the design of the new cities' road infrastructure, these cities need road opening before the population grows to 100m in 50 yrs to come. i Gree with u a hundred times. Just see with there is fire outbreak some, the roads are narrows in passable for fire fighting vehicles. And think politics is the one killing Africa

i'm a civil engineer living in South Africa. What you are saying makes 100% sense both when it comes to drain water management systems and economic viabilty. Roads that leads somewhere, where you won't get trapped in one spot for 2 hours. Going somewhere taking 1 hour instead of 10/15min. You'll need to estiblish new cities from scratch like what Egypt is doing. Leave people who oppose you and just start. They will come running once all is said and done. I live in Pretoria which is a little bit mountainous but still grid. Grid can accommodate all terrains. It depends on your dedication. Make sure your services run on the side of the road with no buildings above them.
@yusufHaffejee-ql9oj2 ай бұрын
I disagree, Egypt is building an entire city from scratch whilst the poor and middle class dont have access to good hospitals, schools or water supply Egypt is gona bankrupt due to el sisi wanting a castle for himself in the new "capital" this is governmental corruption it is not only the people, the middle and lower classes always get left behind in African modernisation

Grid-laid cities work in flatlands. Cities built in hilly places do not always allow grid planning. Also, land tenure system discourages grid planning. In London, Rome, and many other places, the roads twist and curve around private properties. Some cities have the authority to condemn privately held land for public use, called eminent domain, paying fair compensation. But generally private property systems make it difficult to build grid-laid cities. It is the difference between Indian cities, which follow the British system, and Chinese cities, where the state owns the land and can impose how cities are laid out and planned according to a master plan, zoning ordinance, subdivision control, and capital improvement, among other matters. America could not build a high-speed train network because it is very costly to condemn privately held land and build rail tracks. China built some 40,000 kilo meters of high-speed rail in just 10 years. It is a command economy that works in the interest of the common good.

Thanks for sharing these insights! You’re absolutely right that the structure of cities reflects both geographic challenges and land ownership laws. But even beyond Geography and land ownership, I think African cities often face additional challenges, like inconsistent planning, limited infrastructure investment, and fragmented governance structures. I think having a discussion around these issues will create awareness and get many people involved in finding a solution. In Kampala specifically there is luck of planning and the introduction of KCCA which striped off the powers from elective leaders created unhealthy competition and disorganization
@bircruz5552 ай бұрын
@@Liveables African cities have not invested much on the ground yet, like Paris or London. This means that visionary leaders can lay the foundation of well-planed cities with matching infrastructure. They just need to give it thought.
@kawukiwasswa48662 ай бұрын
Hey , whereas I agree of having a grid pattern design in cities, I think it only works better in commercial and industrial areas. Residential or mixed areas must be designed organically following physical features and topography. A working city doesn't depend solely on grid pattern but rather proper planning even if it's layout Is not grided
@Liveables2 ай бұрын
I believe we can still have designed residential and commercial areas in favorable patterns however in the case of Kampala there is no planning at all, they are only on papers and nothing is implemented on the ground. That's why most parts of the city are slowly becoming Ghettos
