I finished the project just before New Years and have been patiently waiting for Spring.

where did you get the hypoid bevel gears?
@steamermeister5 жыл бұрын
They're skew bevel gears (hypoid gear teeth are curved). I got mine here: www.shapeways.com/shops/climaxshop?li=pb I used the 1:22.5 ones because they are the smallest. This is important because the skew gears need to have a smaller diameter than the tread of the wheels in order for the locomotive to be able to traverse switches.

Cool. Is that a kit or scratch built? thx.
@steamermeister5 жыл бұрын
Scratch, sorta. The engine is a TVR1ABB, the boiler is from Regner and a large portion of the drive train is 3D printed stainless steel. I built two Class A Climaxes. #1 has a the Regner vertical boiler and #2 has a Roundhouse horizontal boiler. If you look at some of the earlier videos highlighting them there is a link to the build log in the video description. The build log is also on the My Large Scale website. Just sort the Live Steam forum by number of views. It got a lot of attention at the time.

Are these kits or scratch built? Thx. Marty

A combination of things. Some scratch, some off the shelf. Here's a link to the build log for both locomotives: forums.mylargescale.com/18-live-steam/46322-class-climax-build.html Sift through that first. I'll be happy to answer follow up questions after.

Cool. I'll look forward to more videos.

It takes 7 minutes for the train to travel all 124 feet track; I judge start/finish by when my jacket comes into frame (around 00:40 and 7:40). That's an average 1/20.3 scale speed of 4 miles per hour. The track is nearly a half mile long at this scale.

Awesome build, graham industries tvr1abb?
@steamermeister7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes it is a TVR1ABB. Details of the construction are in the build log (link below).

Did you come up with the design yourself or was you able to find some plans for the Class A ?
@steamermeister8 жыл бұрын
I looked at hundreds of photos (the best of which aren't online) and then sourced as many off the shelf parts as I could. The rest is a mix of scratchbuilt, modified off the shelf, and stainless steel 3D printed parts of my design.

It turned out awesome, I've thought on doing one in 2.5" scale

Hey Sean, sorry I got sidetracked with too many other projects. I am a member of PCLS and BAGRS and go to the steamups in Sacramento every year but don't know about MSSLS. Also on Aristo's web forum. em ne14(my name)at YEAH who. I would really be interested in the details of how you modified the Vandy and if you used the Aristo electronics and Gas tank/regulator set up or not.
@steamermeister11 жыл бұрын
If you're one of the MSSLS folks I spose' I have your email address. Lemme know how I can get in touch with you

No problem, would love to tell you all about it. These are fine locomotives after they've been fixed up correctly. Wouldn't trade mine for an Aster Mike if someone made the offer.

Sean, I'd like to know how you modified the tender. what butane tank, does it have water bath, tender oil top etc. Can you email me? Thanks Bob
@steamermeister11 жыл бұрын
Yes. I decided that the Aristo Vanderbilt tender as it comes is pretty badly proportioned compared to the engine. It's a good starting point tho. I lowered, shortened and narrowed it to fit the look I wanted. The engine has also been highly modified both for aesthetics and performance. Same thing: it's a piece of junk out of the box, but is still a good starting point
