Crosses mean that the string is not being used while strumming and O means that its an open string meaning its not being pressed but used in the strumming (Im also a beginner i rlly tried to make sense)

Keep practicing finger placement until you don't mute the strings. String one string at at time until you hear each one ring right when practicing a chord. I even gave up for a while and came back and figured it out. Patience is key. Also i noticed a big difference in the way i hold my guitar. Try to keep it completely upright and close to your body and not at any angle. Relax your shoulders and keep your fretting hand directly towards the fretboard not at an angle either. Im still a beginner and i just started finding it easier after hours of practicing simple chords.
