Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour. Chicago was founded in 1967 as "a rock band with horns". The brass section is an integral part of the band and their sound. Their first three albums were all double-LPs, unheard of at the time for a new bad to break out with even ONE double LP for a debut. Their fourth album was a monster FOUR LP box set compiled from eight live concerts at Carnegie Hall in NYC. Some of their early releases on vinyl included bonus posters. the Live at Carnegie Hall set included a booklet of photos, a long strip poster, and a massive 6-foot by 4-foot wall poster. Famed for their progressive rock, jazz, and blues influenced music, on their eponymous second album that has this song "25 Or 6 To 4" is a seven movement suite titled "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon", written by trombone player James Pankow. James wrote it for a girl in West Virginia he was dating at the time. The record label at the time of the release in 1970 joined together the opening and closing movements, "Make Me Smile" and "Now More Than Ever" (a reprise of "Make Me Smile") to release a single of "Make Me Smile" that sounded as a complete song. You should listen to the entire suite, which also includes Terry Kath's lead vocal on "Make Me Smile", "Colour My World", and "Now More Than Ever". Keyboard player Robert Lamm sings lead on the second movement "So Much To Say, So Much To Give". There are also three instrumental movements, "Anxiety's Moment", "West Virginia Fantasies", and "To Be Free". I think the 3 minute limit was implemented because we (Italy) in one of the firsts editions sent a song around 9 minutes long and the title is "Corde della mia chitarra" that translates to Strings (?) of my guitar

Terry Kath. One of the greatest guitarists ever. This solo is totally improvised. He was the soul of early Chicago. When he accidentally killed himself the band went into another direction. Still good in my opinion but not the same. Early Chicago is horns and jazz inspired. 80’s Chicago is ballads featuring Peter Cetera, the lead singer here. Chicago had three main singers. Robert Lamm, Terry Kath and Peter Cetera - all equally good. 25 or 6 to 4 is the time of day. 3:35 or 3:36 in the morning and the songwriter is trying to stay awake to complete his song.
