You raise some interesting points. The one thing I’ll say is that the Oxford Movement and the Reconquista are occurring in very different circumstances. The first occurred during the upswing of theological liberalism in the West while the second is being initiated as liberalism appears to be reaching a nadir. The mainline protestant liberals are literally dying out while the youth are hungry for tradition. So the tide is in the favour of the Reconquistators

Douay Rhiems Bishop Chandler edition. This is the only version that sacrificed fluidity for accuracy. I’ll gladly deal with the occasional awkward renderings because I know the translators tried to reflect the intended meaning.

For most Catholics, the best Bible is the NABRE, in the US at least. Why? Because the bishops have chosen to use it in mass. I recommend all Catholics do a Bible in a year type study at least once in their life to understand the whole story of salvation. Then intense study of individual books is great, or study of an ancient language (Latin, Greek, Hebrew), though many people don't have the skill at set for that. At a minimum everybody should meditate on one of the readings from every day's lectionary. That helps a Christian live by the church's seasons and remain obedient to their bishop. Reading your bishop's published homilies is also great.

It’s a horrible Bible, a dynamic translation with a liberal leaning, even with heretical footnotes.

When I graduated from high school (1969) and went to Navy boot-camp, Bro. Stanislaus of the Brothers of Good Shepherd gave me a Jerusalem Bible (1966). I became the Catholic Lay-Leader aboard ship always using the JB. After discharged, I went to a Christian Bible School where I studied Hebrew and Greek, the JB was my primary English text. I received my BA in Religious Studies from a Roman Catholic University. I am an ordained priest. I have received an M.Div., D. Min. and a D. R. S. From a Christian Seminary and became an ordained pastor. I have also studied in Israel, studied Hebrew, Archaeology and Jewish Studies. My family were Jewish but they were forced into the church, I have now become a Rabbi. To me the Jerusalem Bible with my Hebrew and Greek language background is the most accurate and authentic of the translations. The New Jerusalem Bible and revisions are totally liberal and awful. I wish I could make a Messianic translation of the JB.

So your critique is basically that you don't like Protestantism? You've entirely missed the point, it's not about solving the problem to benefit ourselves, but to benefit those who have been affected by this liberalization. Mainline churches have great influence over what Christians believe and are leading many astray, so the solution is not to back off.

NABRE....... not! it may well be a good translation, but some of the commentaries don't belong in the bible. Would you attend service at a 'christian' church if the pastor was an atheist? i am catholic and so i don't know if we can have a situation such as this, as the priests are bound by the dogmas of scripture as the lay. but i read of such a situation in a united church of Canada congregation. in the same manner, such critical commentary, which cast doubt on Jesus' divinity, on whether some books where written by the indicated author, etc is not fit for inclusion in the bible itself- publish it in a journal somewhere. so, i refuse to purchase NABRE and fund such an enterprise. would you give such a bible to a catholic youth, still young in their faith- i think not- and neither would i gave it to an adult. i would have to rip out such pages- but why pay for it.

Somehow I just knew that this was going to end with a "And that's why you should covert back to Catholicism". It's great that the largest Church in the world is being preserved somewhat, like what we're working to do here with the Reconquista.

With regard to Bible apps, I would strongly recommend Verbum, the Catholic version of the long-running Protestant Bible study software, Logos. The price tag is high, but for rigorous academic study, I don't think you an find a better piece of software, from highlighting and notetaking to cross-referencing, interlinear studies, and translation comparisons.

The always say why are there so many bible translations but I think that is really the case with English Bible because I am a Dutch speaking person but I also speak in English so I was looking for also a catholic bible in English and there are a lot well in Dutch I have like 2 ore 3 options there are 3 but only 2 can be used in church because the 3rd the brought out together with the protestants church and that's like the version you will find in hospitals, jails and other public places but for in church we have 2 choices a older version and a new version and than I also have a more older version also but that is only the new testament and I got that more out of interest for the older language the used.

freakylocz14 wrote, <<The RSV-2CE also includes these passages (amongst others) which many modern Bibles omit: John 7:53-8:11 (the woman caught in adultery), Mark 16:9-20 (the longer ending of St. Mark's Gospel), and also the longer version of 1 John 5:7-8 (the shorter version removes the strongest evidence for the Trinity from the Bible). The Church has always considered all of these to be the inspired Word of God, and the footnotes make that very clear.>> While you are correct that the RSV-2CE includes the Pericope Adulterae (Jn 7:53-8:11) and the Longer Ending of Mark (Mk 16:9-20) in its text and has footnotes for both passages to the effect that the Roman Church considers them canonical and inspired, you are mistaken about the Comma Johanneum (1 Jn 5:7-8). The CJ does NOT appear in the text of the RSV-2CE and the footnote says NOTHING about its canonicity or inspiration. Here is what the footnote DOES say: <<* 5:8: This reads as follows in the Vulgate: " 7 There are three who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three that give testimony on earth: the spirit, and the water, and the blood; and these three are one." The "Three Heavenly Witnesses," as the first sentence is called, is first found in the Latin (fourth century) and does not appear in any Greek manuscript until the fifteenth century. It is probably a marginal gloss that found its way into the text.>> So much for <<the strongest evidence for the Trinity from the Bible>>.

Thanks for the comment, and indeed my opinions are just that, my opinions. But I definitely didn't just recommend the Douay-Rheims to everyone, especially since like I said, the Douay-Rheims has major problems. At 26:00 I gave a pretty clear recommendation for the Great Adventure Bible for most people. It's the one I use most of the time I guess you could call me a "Rad-Trad" but to be fair, you don't see many trads recommending the Word on Fire or Ascension Press materials haha. God bless you and may He grant you many joyful years!

24:02 I was raised as Catholic.. did all the things one does up until the Holy Communion as a kid. Bro.. even i don't think that Pope is what Catholic church claimes him to be. I think that both Catholics and Orthodox Christians.. are just that. Christians. I believe in God allmighty and i believe in Jesus Christ of Nazareth... and his teachings. That is about it.. Church has no authority by itself. It's a political institution used to control the masses.. They have proved it many times.
