Nah mate sorry but your wrong, I’m from Coventry and we were taught that being sent to Coventry originated in medieval times when naughty monks around the country were sent to Combe abbey as a punishment and had a vow of silence forced upon them ! I now live in tarporley which is pronounced tarplee Double whammy 🤣🖕

Fact check please and you maybe surprised at how many different versions there are of the origin of being sent to Coventry - your version is one of many- I chose the most appropriate version….

If you don't know your onions, you may as well be a turnip! 😂
@EnglishWithRichardParkes

Heh heh Shakespeare was known to use turnip as an insult, as was Dickens. In almost all references I found, it was meant to insinuate someone who was an idiot/stupid. A “turnip-eater” is considered a stupid person; a. “turnip-head” a peasant or a country bumpkin. And. “turnip” itself has become slang for a simpleton or a fool

I was told that it referred to "branding irons". That looks like a branding iron in one of your pictures, at 0.21. When branding cattle, a branding iron can become too hot to use, if left in the fire too long. It will burn too deep into the flesh. Blacksmiths sometimes made branding irons, but they didn't usually brand cattle. There is the possibility, that I have been misinformed.
