I recall on the K deck the loading motor had an issue where there's a little tiny nylon sleeve that pushes into that metal spline of the motor and goes inside the worm drive nylon gear, the little sleeve splits and so the worm drive then slips. We changed loads fo them on the early K decks which seemed much less reliable than the G deck, the first year or two of K decks had a lot of issues where the loading mechanism nylon parts would distort and stop loading and of course mode switches failed. Compared to the G deck I hated the K deck! - it was the around 1993 I think when they released these and the start of the more serious cost cutting and decline in build quality,
@Elecami7 күн бұрын
Good information thanks. I think one of my others suffered the loading worm slipping, can't remember if I was able to do anything about it. I've noticed nylon parts cracked in other places like the part that holds the pinch roller on in older mechanisms. The grease probably degrades the nylon.

I agree, the revised G Mech circa 1990 was the high tide mark of build quality for Panasonic. VCRs like the one in this video did have less capacitor issues but tons of problems with load motor sleeves as you say and low torque drum motors in the early SD series of machines. Mind you, I'd still take a K mech over the competition. The other brands went cheap and nasty much sooner.

When we first encountered the K mech we called it the Krap mechanism. But it was pretty reliable as it turned out. If it spits the tape out as soon as it loads, check the capstan flywheel brake pad isn’t sticky. It can stop the capstan rotating and that ejects the tape for safety. You may think it looks cheap but it wasn’t cheap to buy. The Z mech was worst of all.

Hello, I recently found an NV-M5 in almost perfect condition. My only issue with it is the lens is quite fogged, and the autofocus system seems to be struggling quite badly. I was wondering if you had any resources regarding how to disassemble the lens assembly for cleaning. Additionally, the machine seems to be playing tapes ever so slightly too slow, maybe around 0.9x speed. If you had any advice or information regarding how to fix these issues it would be greatly appreciated.
@Elecami9 күн бұрын
it might not be possible to dismantle the lens enough. Some of the lens are held in plastic moldings. Not sure if the Service Manual will explain it. Not sure about the speed. Will it play back something it recorded at the right speed? Probably needs some capacitors replaced at a minimum.
@siroescribano48729 күн бұрын
@Elecami The speed issue only happens with one tape which also has other issues but, after testing a few other tapes they all play at normal speeds with good image quality. Sadly the service manual says absolutely nothing about disassembling the lens. I have read on the service manual that there is a screw used for setting & locking infinity focus, so I’m hoping undoing that screws allows for the front lens group to be unscrewed, hopefully allowing for some cleaning to be done.

I totally agree on leaded solder. I hate working on something with lead-free solder because it's much higher temp to melt and harder to desolder things cleanly. My good old 63/37 leaded solder from over 30 years ago works great and makes very nice solder joints. I also inherited a couple old spools of 60/40 solder that makes a very nice shiny joint. It's not like I'm going to eat the stuff, and I always wash my hands after doing solder work.

I recently picked up an NV-FS75 that functionally works quite well, however even though I've cleaned the heads extensively there is some RGB color noise during playback and recording. I suppose in theory both the read and write heads could be 'worn out' in the same way, but I suspect something else is causing it. I had a quick go at checking some caps on the power supply, and I found a few small ones at the very end of the secondary circuit that needed replacing, but it didn't seem to make a difference (even though I didn't trust those caps regardless). Is it worth taking the time to really open up the PSU to remove all the electrolytic caps and replace them, or could the color noise be coming from somewhere else?
@michaell212028 күн бұрын
@@alexss3 If the FS75 is anything like the FS90 it has some surface mount electrolytic caps that fail in the Y/C processing area. Look for a hybrid board with a white ceramic look to it. The SM caps leak. There are very few SM caps in these machines luckily. Recapping the PSU is par for the course for this era of machines. Use 105 degree caps. I've seen it cause herring bone interference on the picture. PSU's are pretty reliable other than caps.
@alexss328 күн бұрын
@@michaell2120 I have the service manual so I will take a look to see if there are any surface mount caps around the Y/C circuitry. Getting the entire PSU recapped will be done as well as you suggest.

@@alexss3 I think you should replace all the power supply caps. Except the large high voltage one on the primary, that one is usually still ok. All the others should be replaced. Do you know why my panasonic isn't counting correctly on rewind? Haven't tried fast forward. Is it because on rewind the machine half loads and so might not be passing the ACE head correctly?
@ElecamiАй бұрын
Counting on the tape counter? It could be that the tape is blank or has sections that don't have anything recorded on it.
@kingshearer2Ай бұрын
@@Elecami I sussed out what it was, basically when the panny RWD's or FFWD's the p4 arm drops off maybe to the half load position ( I think it's called) and so when RWDing and FFWDing the tape isn't in contact with the main head drum. This alters the angles of the tape path and in my case the tape wasn't touching the ACE assembly which measures the time. So I had to play around with the p5 arm by tightening it until I got the counts roughly correct, it's a real pain I spnt ages on it. Anyway thanks for your replies mate 👍

I had earlier just realigned the whole mechanism (following the g deck video) after I bought it and realised the p5 wasn't correctly connected to the sector gear (one tooth out) now it works ok. Mode switch is next to clean, but like yours it's in a real awkward place and there's an additional motor blocking access. I've had to order a rachet screwdriver to undo the screw behind the motor so I can get to the mode switch.
