I live about 25 miles from ORD and hear this often. It can be loud, it’s like the Enterprise dropping out of warp speed. Lol. But it doesn’t happen with every aircraft. Thanks for helping to solve this mystery!

I'm about nine miles Northeast of CVG, and hear this all the time and always wondered - I thought it was the engines throttling down to make more of/the rest of the descent.

I’m an Airbus captain, it’s the speedbrakes. Simple

During the winter months when the winds are out of the north the flight path changes and the planes fly over my house. It’s a cool but creepy sound. Too bad they’re fixing the so called problem.

The sound @0.31 seconds is the air brakes being deployed. This is a control surface on the top side of the wing which is tilted vertically into the air stream to reduce the aircraft velocity. You can also tell when it is retracted again by the noise stopping.

I've heard 3 explanations and I don't know which to believe.... reverse doppler, harmonic from a panel on the wing, and now speedbrakes

Good to know. I hear this all day long near downtown St. Petersburg as planes are coming downwind before turning base into TPA for runways 01. Never knew it was just the Airbuses.

At night, when I'm in bed, and I hear this sound, it freaks me out because it sounds like some UFO, but I remind myself it's just an Airbus descending. Beautiful sound indeed.

well, the fopp hole under the wings of the a320 was caused by airflow getting blowed like a flute, air passes cause sounds

What is the sound that happens between 00:13-00:17 sound like it's braking... Is it still the FOPP cavities? I have been trying for ages to determine where does it come froms, I always thinks of air brakes or slats/flaps
@Major_Tom983 ай бұрын
I’m pretty certain it’s the flaps. I’ve heard this from several Airbuses plus a C-17. If you search “Avro jet flaps sound” you’ll hear something very similar.
@DavidSmith-yi8ou2 ай бұрын
I fly these for a living and I’m not sure what is meant by ‘FOPP’ mentioned in this comments section. I can say though that the howling sound heard in this clip definitely occurs when deploying speed brakes at higher speeds with a clean wing.

If you go plane spotting and spot Airbus a320 planes making those noises, it may sound really epic to play the song, Gangsta’s Paradise, while an airplane is flying. Jet airliners tend to have really epic noises when they’re flying, and the choirs of Gangsta’s Paradise are amazing. It feels like the best song for airplanes, especially the Airbus a320s. They have very unique noises that are the most epic sounds of a commercial jetliner.
