I really try to avoid musical hyperbole as much as possible - talk about music is already overflowing with it - but it really is astonishing that a human being could come up with something as otherworldly as the Heiliger Dankgesang. I find it impossibly moving, and every time I hear it I'm astonished at where it goes from where it starts. There's a certain, almost minimalist, simplicity to the opening, but with that Beethovenian fixation on one simple idea - I always think of him as being like a dog gnawing on a bone, determined to get everything he can out of it. But as it goes on it unfolds whole worlds. Maybe the only other piece I can think of with a similar combination of both intense focus and expansiveness is the Chaconne from the 2nd violin Partita.

This is a really difficult quartet for the would-be learner group. Complicated harmonies driven by sudden passing of melodic interest from one part to another, complicated rhythms, which must be known by all members of the quartet, especially when not written in your part - very Beethovenian in the end. Mendlessohn's equivalent of Brahm's 1st symphony, post-Beethoven! Very grateful for your interpretation: articulation, bowing, etc worthy to be studied 🙂
