Great video, thank you for taking your time and putting in the effort to highlight how important coal mines were in the UK. The pits weren't just a place to work; they were the heart and soul of every community, including the welfare clubs where people went to have a pint. 👍

Just before silver hill closed they did a trip down the mine for relatives of certain people that worked down there and politicians ect, my dad was a Deputy Engineer at silver hill but you had to be 16 to go down a mine, i was 14 at the time so i missed out and my brother went instead, I was gutted at the time but after watching this i,m glad, i think i would have more than likely panicked. got so much more respect for my dad after watching this,

my dad was the Deputy engineer Keith Sams. He worked there my entire childhood up until its very last day. I remember the stress he was under and the sadness felt by all as it was wound down, Its only now that im 45 years old that i realise how hard my dad worked, working most weekends so that my mum and us 4 kids could have everything we needed in life. Hes 80 years old now and in really good health and he joked the other day how our electric bills wouldnt be as large as they are if they had stayed open. thank you for all those years these men put in providing us with heat and light,

Do men who worked through the strike and ended up being shafted by the Tories feel silly/stupid/ashamed for doing so? Genuinely wonder how having crossed picket lines they feel now thy Scargill was proved to be right

My grandfather George Hawksley brn 1861 went underground aged 10 in Derbyshire . He moved his family to Skegby Notts to work at Silverhill Pit in 1901 he continued work there until just before 2nd WW . He was leader of the pit brass band taking them into brass band competitions . Three of his sons were also at Silverhill . George Hawksley died at Skegby 1952

Absolutely amazing to see so much of the pit my grandad speak so much and so fondly of :)
And now they import coal from Poland how's that for logic.

I hope margaret thatcher is burning in Hell. Followed by her children, And her grandchildren. And her grandchildren's children. And her grandchildren's grandchildren. For the damage & pain she inflicted on this country from which it will never recover. How glad I was when her grubby lothario ministers loyally stabbed her in the back! History will be the judge.

The electricians office was just off the shaft side in the pit bottom , we would have got down in there ;)

Always plenty of places to get the head down in a pit.
@gasfast111 жыл бұрын
LOL, if the mine was operational, you would have had to step over multiple groups of sleeping electricians on your rounds.

kind thoughts life was better back then, underground by 7 am but back up the shaft by 3.15 pm shower and then dinner in the canteen paid in cash every Friday lots of mates and banter fathers, sons, grandfathers going back generations, I remember looking at Silverhill from Huthwaite I used to visit my grandmother Walked over the Brierly Park area and looked at the mine all lit up and lots of activity, Then next time i visited it was all gone as if none of the headstocks and yards ever existed.
