A relationship with God/Higher power will reveal all our shortcomings and provide a way to deal with life, people, places, things and ourselves in a healthy helpful way. Forgiveness is the key to this journey. A relationship with God is where true healing true power exists day night and holiday... Always there. spiritual sobriety emotional sobriety starts with admittance which leads to humble repentance and the narrow path of a sanctified dignified life where all the glory goes to our higher power, as we become useful vessels of grace mercy compassion and love. People places and things will let you down yes even AA will let you down however God will not. God got me to AA and AA got me to God... Thank God they didn't hang the horse thief after he sobered up. Aloha

I dare say that this letter sums up the ills of all humans, not just alcoholics. Social media and advertising have strengthened and entrenched these unhealthy dependencies. The younger generations seem to crave positive reinforcement to the point they feel they have to have it. Ex. "Using the letters of my name, describe me and what I mean to you".......we get that dopamine boost which is short lived. We mentally retreat into mild depression and low self esteem. So we make a post similar to the example I used. And we now need more of this reinforcement for us to feel good about ourselves. Yet at our core we don't really believe any of the things people are saying about us. We are dependent upon what others think about us. Can't we see how this is destroying us?

After going to AA for 3.5 years relapsing and trying to listen to some of those quoting the big book and talking a good talk I ended up in a treatment centre , for week upon week I had to learn to talk about my feelings . No quoting books or saying my sponsor says this or Clancy says that . Pure emotional work which set me up for a successful recovery in AA and NA . I see people many years sober in 12 step programmes for years sober who would struggle with the emotional work of group therapy .

Bill Wilson took LSD in 1956 and 1957 and recommended it for certain types of alcoholics. Interestingly, he had his revelation around the same time "Suddenly, I realized what the matter was. My basic flaw had always been dependence, almost absolute dependence, on people or circumstances to supply me with prestige, security, and the like. Failing to get these things according to my perfectionist dreams and specifications, I had fought for them. And when defeat came, so did my depression."

I really don’t know what to make of this. I don’t like it when parents are to blame for peoples problems. My dad was a great guy. My short-comings are not his fault. What happened to the God sized hole idea. By the way this shoulding business was put out years ago. I doubt he was the first either. People have to be somewhat pleasing to be in relationship.

My p etdinal disappointment is not getting to hear Bill's message..... So.... My personal opinion is this is quite the scientific involvement study in the subject material... tho it seems to take so much away from simple message & personal discernment from reading or simply listening to Bill's written letter. Would've been easier(( for me )) to understand & comprehend if the study you offer were after listening to his letter in it's entirety . This process offered confused me. I don't even remember what small portion you read before your interpretation of what he offers. He said something about his fear of great depression taking over again deeper than his previous experience of it. I cannot hear Bill's message here all. I completely understand all your quotes from all the dif people offering insight into this personal recovery from source of our immaturity in relationship intimacy with Self~God ~ Then Others, incuding all dif Personal relations with institution's ~ employment all areas of living life......accountability respond~ ability rather than re~ action from source of previous limited (ineffective) unconscious past influences Us entiry unaware ......by our own means.... of why we keep finding ourselves in same experience of feeling & perceiving we sre not living in our desired state of reality~ which is contentment in our own skin in our own experience.... without something from outside ourselves ingested or acted upon to give temporary relief from the disturbing unrelenting same experience no matter what we seem to to do of our own resources to evade the irritable restless discontentment we've attempted compulsively to self medicate with all manner of substance people places things. WITH AN ALCOHOLIC THIS IS DEADLY BECAUSE OF THE PHYSICAL DEMAND FROM BODY'S CHEMICAL REACTION TO THE SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN PHENOMENON OF CRAVING CREATING DEMAND FOR MORE ALCOHOL WHICH WILL KILL A REAL ALCOHOLIC.. This cycle of dependency is lived out in all areas of our lives re; emotional sobriety or~ rather~ mature healthy emotional Recovery = contentment in relationships~ life experience no matter the circumstance. THERE ARE VICTIMS IN THIS LIFE. THERE IS OPPORTUNITY FOR DIF dif PERCEPTION ATTITUDE WITH COPING WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING A VICTIM. Our words have severe powerful consequences upon others and our reality. WE NEED TO BE AS ACCOUNTABLE AS POSSIBLE FOR OUR WORDS POSSIBLE EFFECT UPON OTHERS.... OUR brothers and sisters ...... We do influence the reality of OUR WORLD Living life on God's H.P. (life's) terms. ***The only Authority on A.A. Is our Text Book 164 pages. ****This was my personal experience strength and hope only. ****

Blessings, however even if it does not work out the way we want/expect it to we can be okay and not drink if we are willing to draw close to our higher power and that is where our true dependency needs to be.... Because even when AA people places things cannot be around, God is... That source is the perfect power to be plugged into, it never goes out, its always there for us day, night or holiday God is there if we seek and God will see us through help us overcome any situation even death. I pray things are going better for you and yours, this too shall pass if we let it

Alot of Alcoholic's are going to hell with thier false God's, Jesus Christ said I am the way the truth and the life, no man commeth unto the father but by me, I'm 20years sober from alcohol gambling, cigerates, drug's, mostly alcohol, I've only realized the bigger book of the big book the Holy Bible, pity no one told me sooner, Jesus died for your sins, ask him to forgive

I'm guessing you're not actually in AA, because if you were you would have heard in our preamble that is read in the opening of every meeting the line stating, 'AA is not allied with any SECT, DENOMINATION, politics, organization or institution'. If the term 'God of your understanding' was not used on Bill W. before he got sober, there would be no AA. There are plenty of Jews, Hindi's, Muslims, Buddhists, and non affiliated who have decades of sobriety in AA. Are you going to tell the American Indian with 30 years, who follows his nation's traditional spiritual path, that their sobriety is built on a falsehood?

@@willdenham I am sober 20 year's and was decieved by the same way you think, Jesus Christ gave us the 12-steps as he goes by the number 12 apostles, I suggest you study more into were thy will be done came from the our father, don't be worried about muslim, hindus or other SECTS Jesus Christ is not a SECT or a religion, Bill W studied the Bible in the Oxford group before AA, so Bill knew who Jesus is, the god of your so called understanding came afterwards and brought Satan in the room's, I used it myself and made up my own god to suit me so I wouldn't have to change, thank God he revealed himself

Plenty of people change with the aid of their HIGHER POWER. I realize the Oxford group are our predecessors, and Jesus and Christ (Christ is not Jesus' last name, but part of the Trinity) is specific to Christianity which would be one of the religions described in our preamble when we say we "are not allied with any". Being in AA 20 years and not having read Bill's story, I think says you are the one who needs to do the studying. In Bill's story he thoroughly explains that if Ebby had not told him that it could be a God of his own understanding, considering Bill was an atheist, he would have never considered asking for God's help to get him sober and engaged with the Oxford's SIX steps. All this aside, Jesus and Christ are never mentioned in our basic text, yet higher power or God are on almost every page of "How it Works", "We Agnostics", and "More About Alcoholism". More importantly, you still have not explained how those who are not Christian have gained and kept their sobriety in AA. It also appears that you may benefit from a Spellers Anonymous if it may exist. Have you heard of auto correct? It's this new thing on board of every computer's software.

Deeper fourth n fith step. Possibly with therapist. Every nook and cranny of our past. Childhood. Adolescence. Helping others is just a bandaid if we don’t take this self emotional journey. Where did these hurts come. Exactly. What deep emotional defect did I adopt about myself. God has to be trusted. Step 2 n 3. I have to find deep daily self acceptance. Self love. Then absolutely give love and direction away. Step 12.
