Professors in DW and The City of Death Like 99% of classic who fandom I love the Fourth Doctor. Oddly though, whilst I enjoy it greatly, I seem to be the one person in the world that does not consider The City of Death to be his penultimate episode and really just for one reason, yet an issue that so often occurred in the series. That problem being how professors are always portrayed as crazy lunatics with a genius mind but no normal social skills whatsoever and always eccentric. Take the professor in Robot, the worse German accent in history professor in The Nightmare of Eden, the lunatic fascist in Inferno, the earnest but doddery old man in the Twin Dilemma and many more with maybe Professor Litefoot being the exception and of course River Song. Professor Fyodor Nikolai Kerensky in the City of Death was one complete stereotype of how DW usually represents professors and with that forced accent I find his character cringe to watch. I still think it is a wonderful story, but it never ceases to amaze me (as Tom often would say) that this has never seemed to be considered any kind of let down in an otherwise great story.

Worth bearing in mind that after the first Pertwee season, this era really started focusing on a 4x5+6 format. They really nailed the 4 part structure (even when the stories weren't the best) but struggled with the 6 parters and what mostly worked was subdivision. Inferno worked for being effectively 2+4+1, Daemons (only 5 parts but still roughly in the same mould) was a rare success in through storytelling but most dragged. Invasion of the Dinosaurs showed the way ahead in a sense because it was basically a 2+4 subdivision. Most of the Baker era refined this with 2+4 (eg Seeds of Doom) or 4+2 (eg Invasion of Time), although Genesis and Talons were rare beasts and were completely successful as through written 6ers. Worth considering too that the revival era's standard of 45 mins per story is the screen time equivalent of 2 old episodes but the action is very compressed (hence the common complaint about rushed resolutions) so they can be compared to truncated 4 parters. The modern doubles are the equivalent of 4 old episodes but similarly compressed so can roughly be regarded as shortened 6 parters. Notable they generally involve a major switch of emphasis at the halfway mark. Finally, recalling my past, we generally didn't regard the bloat as particularly bloaty. If you'd missed an episode it was gone forever and you couldn't rewatch or binge, so the recapitulation of events, characters and even settings every week was necessary. By that I don't just mean the repeated lead up to the cliffhanger, I mean everything about the story. The show had to constantly put you firmly back into the situation after a week off.

Trying not to make the obvious joke about resolution would be a certain kind of anime given the plot centres around a tentacle creature and a woman.

04.40: I can't tell if all that talk about memes is a joke or not. Do people really think that the word 'meme' is a 21st century invention? It's been around for decades - it just means an idea passed around by non-genetic means. The story is using the word in its classic sense. Apologies if it was a joke (playing dumb, etc), but these days, it's hard to tell...

Thirteen's most defining moment for me was not even in the show and came after two series, the video she filmed during the pandemic, she's essentially hiding in a cupboard, but her reassuring words and her energy, that made me love Jodie as the Doctor

Yeah, they do continue "his work" all wright. Living in Russia now almost as disurbing as it was during The Stalin's era. Screw this Hatcher fellow for trying to turning my favorite Doctor into a Stalin apologist. But I don't consider Seventh Stalinist to be a canon.

3:07 He's definitely the best looking Doctor. He was a total STUD in the movie, and he still looks great for his age. Best fashion sense too. Edit: 3:30 Wait, what? No way, broski. Just look at how they both look now versus how they both looked then. No freaking competition. They may as well be the same age, because Tennant looks it. Sorry, but it's true. 😂

I gotta say, I really enjoy your videos, but the thumbnails alone are absolutely stellar. I was tripping so hard the other day, and I kept my phone screen on for hours, just carrying the 4th Doctor with me. I've got them all lined up in a playlist now, and I've already decided that next time 8 is gonna get the top spot. Great thumbnails. 😂

Saw Kalki like you suggested. It's not what I expected from the synopsis. Very enjoyable! But there was a good 30min-hour of stuff there that could be trimmed, not least of which was because it felt so dedicated to standard Bollywood tropes at the expense of a tighter script. And I am once again suggesting people read Kubera omg. It's so good. Hindu/Buddhism inspired take on a heavenly war, complete with time travel.
@SamyulDavis23 күн бұрын
It hangs in the first act forever and the 'to be continued' hit me harder than Dune's. Still unsure how I feel about it, but I'd happily take more 6 hours of that in future years.

@@SamyulDavis Well you're in luck, because Kubera is, uh, half as long as One Piece. And everyone should read Kubera.
