We need a version of this for Captain Kathryn Janeway (put a little half-syllable in the middle to keep the meter). It would really fit, particularly with stills from the episode "Night".

Oh, I have seen the madness gleaming in the serpent's eye and that is what I've come to you to tell. For the queen of blue hive told me, When I called to her to die When I made her send my enemies to hell. There's a price for too much cleverness, a price for too much change, the mah'jat(?) learned too much from man And they have grown too strange. That was the lesson that she had to teach. The hives have grown too large to hear, flown beyond her range, and madness is the queen of serpent's reach. And the oldest human said it while I stood to hear my fate With slow death all that I could see ahead. There is a thing not on our tapes, a thing you'll learn too late. Too many killed, yet not enough are dead. There's a price for too much arrogance, a price for too much greed, and in complacent ignorance we've sown the whirlwind seed. But nobody else there listened to his speech. We contrin(?) outlive all we love forgetting all we need, and we are all gone mad in serpent's reach. And so I'm here to show you, in the way you understand, we have more things to learn, more debts to pay. And for all the easy murders, all the victories you planned, your foolishness has thrown it all away. There's a price for all the men we mold a price for all the tapes. The betas and their aziz-clones(?) we treat as clever apes. And a tidal wave is rising, as we dance upon the beach. Sneering at our own reflections, laughing at our shadows' shapes. Til madness drowns us all in serpent's reach. I've thrown the wands to often, played too many games of sedge(?), and hoped you thought I gambled for a lark. You've won the ships, you've won the stars, you think you've all the edge. But now at last we're dicing for the dark. There's a price for too much sadness, and a price for too much pain, too much time in the singing darkness of the hive-folks' brain, but I have found someone to love, someone to trust and teach, and maybe, in the darkness, we can learn how to be sane. When morning comes again to serpent's reach.

*Seabright* Azi Genetically engineered clones , the Union uses for lack of people. A bunch of scientists , with no practical experience, in anything beyond their narrow fields, but with computer programs and instruction for everything they could dream of. Rebels and refugees , all rolled together. They left Earth a step ahead of death. That was the beginning of the Union. Now .. as bad as the corporate dominated fascist Earth, if not worse in some ways.

The alien species indigenous to the Cerdin planet is named the "majat", hence phonetic "mah'jat" in your lyrics. The "Azi" are human clones used as slaves in the Alliance-Union universe. "Betas" are normal humans, as opposed to the ruling cast of "Kontrin", who "program" them to be faithful to the cast system. Also, "sedge" is rather "Sej", a dicing game popular in this setting. All hints here are taken from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpent%27s_Reach I've not read the book, but I guess I'll search for it now I've heard this song ^-^

If it did, that'd be an awesome detail. More likely though, his character arc was meant as a 'Nature vs Nurture' exercise. He's got quite a compelling arc all the same, even if a lot of people reduce it down to 'He's Shepard's adoptive son.'

We fought your fight and we died in droves In a rearguard action with no reward We spilled our guts to cover your butts Spending ships and lives we could ill-afford And now Earth-side says we can't win Well we could have won if we'd gotten support Now they say pull back Now they say pull out Now they say the war is over, mission abort But they're not here and they do not care Our dead are just numbers on a page They only see how the money rolls out And that war is a costly thing to wage So the Union sneers, and Union laughs And the Merchanters turn and run away And the stations where, we fought and died If they could would throw us out of their bays Give up, give in says Earth-side now And the Merchanters sing the same refrain But we won't stand this kind of defeat and knowing our people died in vain It was our blood spilled on the stars Do you think you can deal it away? Well you merchant-hogs better think again- Mazian will make the Union pay You decry our fights, you deny our dues Well we can learn from every mistake You'll repay what we spent in blood What you won't give us freely we'll take We'll contest each star Union wants This is war not some bureaucrats game So we hear you're calling us pirates now Then screw you all we'll earn the motherless name

Wanton games, played in the dark The oldest call, we do not hark The tunnels dark and sweet with soil Detain us from your human toil This is our world The pattern that must be This is our world The pattern makes us free Though once you came from far away This world is ours, by new rules we play This is our world You hunt us through the rocks and rills But cannot breach the hollow hills You fear us for we've lost your way It's better that you stay away Chorus And now the ships have come again To impose on us the rules of men But we're not human anymore No reckoning of common lore Chorus The Calibans are masters still Beware of we who work their will The pattern growing day by day Molds soil and stone and human clay Chorus
