Hello, I'm in the USA and was wondering where to buy the optional roofing filters. And what website do I find the instructions? Thanks in advance.

Why in the world didn't Yaesu just install the dang filters in the first place....?
@g0fvt Жыл бұрын
My filters have just arrived for my FTDX101MP, I am in the UK and they are readily available. Hopefully will get it all done promptly. 73 edit: Fitted them today, the 1200hz filters are more useful than I had expected. Good for digging out noisy SSB. The miniature coaxial connectors are the most fiddly part of the job. 73
@theVizitor2012 Жыл бұрын
can you give me the vendor you purchased from? Thanks
@g0fvt Жыл бұрын
@@theVizitor2012 the filters were all purchased from LAMCO I fitted the 300Hz CW filter for the sub receiver at the same time as I fitted the 1200Hz filters. I hope not to see the inside of this radio for a very long time now! 73

Howard, thanks for the great tutorial! I added the 300 Hz CW crystal filters to both receivers of my FT-DX101D. The filters are offered here in Germany by a well-known dealer, but no installation instructions are included. Therefore your video was very appreciated! The modification went smoothly, however you should already have experience with such circuit boards. If you do a lot of CW and DX, the narrow filters are worth the investment. 73 de Georg, DL5NO

Can you make a video of how this filter actually works when receiving signals. Comparison of 1.2kHz to 3kHz filters. I'm thinking about installing an optional 1.2kHz filter, but I don't know if it makes sense

You'd think after watching the video of the factory assembly of this rig that the so-called TLC would have avoided all that seems to be vexing this radio. So much for using "quality parts." You wonder!

Good info. Thans. I need to replaced ch. B AF/RF knob that I bumped and damaged. I know I can do it. Looks like that knob is soldered to the mini pcb. Either way your video shows how to access the front panel. Just one little bump and the know got bent.

This Alps encoder in this video again failed after a few months , Kenwood had an epidemic problem and so I researched a replacement in the following video and HALT tested it. The replacement made by Bourns far outlives the original Alps encoder in this vide .please Have a look at this video link kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2OZnHqkrZloY6s at the 15 minute mark and you'll hear the part number that I finally have been using since the video . I hope that I was able to help .The Bourns will last for life .. 73 de Howard VE2AED

I don't care how good or bad the encoders are, between dust and oxidation they are just a cheap way out. Convert it to an optical and be done with it. No more problems. My 590 is less than 2 years old and it started about 6 months ago. You never showed the inside of the ALPS encoder?
@howardrosen55738 жыл бұрын
There are some drop in optical switches which can replace the switch. 73
@ecstrat1008 жыл бұрын
+Howard Rosen; Interesting! I must have been looking in the wrong places. Where might I find something like that? I ended up building a driver circuit as I wanted to use contacts (reed switches) as to not hurt the PIC in the rig. I have run into this problem many times with other electronic stuff. In most cases I can reprogram the micro for the optical. 73 Pat KD4OBQ

I just replaced one on my ts-590 with an optical encoder. Had to make up some circuitry but works much better and don't have to worry about it going south. Rig is less than 2 years old.

How long is the original shaft? how much did you cut off the replacement? The original encoder looks has a 6 pin . the replacement look like 8 pin. i am not sure hi
@howardrosen55738 жыл бұрын
Shaft doesn't require cutting. The additional 2 contacts are a momentary switch which you leave unconnected on the 990,simply cut them off..
@slbynum6 жыл бұрын
What i dont get is you did mention to be careful when grinding down the shaft at the 15:33 mark. So your saying that isnt necessary?

Thanks for making this video. I just had to replace the NR pot and face plate for the 990S and this video helped in getting started. Be sure to take a close look at each slide in cable. The smaller ones just slide in with minimal force. The larger cables have two types of holding clips. The black ones slide up for release while the others open out. Be sure to open the larger clips before sliding them in or out. Take the time to understand which one your trying to disconnect. Having to replace one of the LCD screens is straight forward and predictable. Aluminum colored screws connect to the face plate. Black screws connect to metal frame and not the face plate directly. Small 3.5 glass in front of smaller lcd is held on with double sided tape and removable from front. I used East Coast Kenwood Parts and received parts in 2 weeks from Kenwood Japan. 73, W8VI

Isn't that what ham radio is supposed to be about ? :) , in any electronic product there is always opportunity for failure of a component .
@mewcomm10 жыл бұрын
No this is not what Ham Radio is about. Fixing any radio built since about 1980 is beyond the skillset of the vast majority of Ham radio operators. This is technician work or that of a bored EE. Technical repair ability is ridiculously ascribed to Ham Ops. It is one of the myths of the hobby. Attention: To the 99% of all Hams. If you have a 2014 Xcvr that needs ANY mod. Put it in the box, wrap it in brown paper and ship it to the manufacturer and don't watch these silly videos produced by narcissistic technical professionals.
@flexairz9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Whatley This IS what ham radio is about. Being able to repair or at least diagnose the issue. Your reply goes to show that this is beyond your capabilities, which is not a problem. But don't make a fool of anyone who IS able to these repairs and loves to do it, that's just childish.

I am considering a purchase of a TS-990. I am really on the fence about it. It appears that there is some light corrosion of the right side of the chassis. I noticed that when you were loosening the screws on the right side to fold down the front panel. Do you remember seeing that or was it something else? Otherwise, how do you like the rig.
@howardrosen557310 жыл бұрын
The rig is great , I've read a few complaints however I am thoroughly happy with it , the S meter isn't accurate but that's not really a serious problem , I've lived with virtually every model of radio and they all have a quirk or two ,
@JamesJ785110 жыл бұрын
Howard Rosen Hi. Thank you for your comments. I ended up purchasing a TS-990. I have nothing really to complain about. The S meter in mine seems comparable to the other rigs in my station. I am very happy with the rig. Thus far, it is the best rig I have owned for pulling out weak stations on SSB. In comparison, I have owned a FTDX-9000, FTDX-3000, IC-7700, Flex 5000a. The TS-990 has proven to be the best rig I have owned for weak signal SSB work.

Very strange, i had the TS-570DG with the same encoder problem. I fixed it with an original part. Amazing that Kenwood still did not use better quality parts. They really should learn from the old problems and get rid of it. Great video and for sure a great TRX.
@pvdk11 жыл бұрын
Impressive and well explained video. A small tip: if filming a subject (radio) try to trow the light from the front and not from your back as you trow a lot of shadow on the subject making it dark.
@averydavis32908 жыл бұрын
Also, it helps if you keep your subject in frame. The main point of this video is extracting the control from the panel, and when that is done, it is immediately taken out of frame and talked about for nearly a minute with nothing happening on screen. Closeups of the control would have helped in planning for the PCB rework of removing the old one and installing the new one. Otherwise, this video looks very helpful.
