I am listening to this so loudly that my desk is vibrating. That a near-deaf genius composed this is mind-boggling.

I’ve never heard such a honest expression of brokenness heartbreak and terror in orchestral music before this. It should almost come with an advisory that the listener might be prone to fetal positions and crying Upon deep listening. It’s like he turns everything that’s beautiful and kind in nature into something so cynical and grotesque that it’s almost impossible to listen to except that it’s so beautiful. I feel like I’m eavesdropping on his breakdown. The part that hits me hardest s the reveal of the big Db major before the sledgehammer of the A minor that leads to the “scream .” I cherish this music. He may not have approved of it being heard but as a Mahler junkie this means so much to me.

Mahler music it is, but orchestration is not. It was done by someone else to resemble on Mahler style.

She got accepted into The Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 10. It’s arguably the most selective of any school, music or otherwise, with an acceptance rate of under 2%.

The piece doesn't have to be five movements that were orchestrated. Mahler only orchestrated the first movement, but his health declined and he couldn't finish it. I know it was great that Mahler wrote hour long symphonies with five or six movements. But a whole symphony could be just one movement and it was unnecessary that composers tried to later orchestrate the rest of the piece. If a composer doesn't finish their composition, than it should be left alone.

I went to see her last year in Chicago. She just played as soloist. It was magical. I cannot imagine how taxing must be from a physical point of view. I never thought about that until I saw her playing for more than one hour....But the music (mostly Bach) was incredible. She is a treasure.

Here’s a screenshot of an album I bought in the late 70s… Various scholars tried to do performing versions, fleshing out the rough draft to be a full symphony by Mahler. Not sure it’s realistic, but it was worth listening to. 13:16 13:16

Unfortunately, I feel like only baby boomers appreciate this music. It’s sad because I’m sure the 20 and 30 somethings could learn a lot from it.

I believe that you can only like Mahler if you are prepared not to want to explain music, but simply rely on yourself, on what sound does to you. I don't care about composers' intentions, if I don't feel anything, then it's boring and superfluous in my world. With Mahler it's the same as with Beethoven - I have the feeling that something is communicating with me that is sometimes no longer me at all, but something inside me that consists only of feeling, without reason, thought, knowledge, but only sound in space, which opens up further and further and becomes boundless, as in Mahler's 9th and 10th symphonies. What else would he have composed, what else would have been possible for him if he had had 10 or even 20 more years?

Boggles the mind that this survey of piano technique was written during Chopin’s late teens and early twenties by a musician whose only teachers were a violinist and a composer (though one steeped in Bach). More miraculous, as Arrau shows, the etudes are far more about music than technique. Arrau greatly admired Cortot’s Chopin and the Chilean like the Swiss-Frenchman was steeped in German romanticism, but Arrau also relishes the classical grounding of Chopin. If you like this try Arrau’s often disparaged early ‘50s Chopin project, left unfinished due to poor sales. I love it.

Just a small piece of the almost sketchy introduction, or almost small plans of main parts of Symphony No. 10, but what a greatness and genius of this music, and for the entire symphonic work of Gustav Mahler. If the symphony had been completely finished, I have no doubt that Bernstein would have taken its partitura with him to a better place. Masterpiece.
