I would still not trust the femce and fall asleep there. What if it tried to jump over the fence

True, one needs to be cautious. Still, we used the femce for more than ten years and saw many bears, but never one jumping over.

@@joukeprop that's true because you can never 100% be sure it won't happen at all. All it takes is that one unlucky day to turn into a nightmare. Better to be safe and alive.

It works if they approach it cautiously during the day. I read about a bear walking into one without seeing it at night and by the time it has a wee shock the bear has already knocked it down and was inside the camp eating folk. I think it was the Matthew Dyer case and there have been others. I'd suggest light but that might attract them for all I know.

@@joukeprop - Well, my comment was a general comment about fences as the video seems to be generally about fences. Your video also states: "For adequate protection, the electric fence should be used in combination with other means to detect and scare polar bears." So you are not suggesting they are bear-proof. I read that a French woman was attacked on Svalbard last year leading to a bear being shot dead and a campsite manager was killed in a site without fences again they shot the bear. I know there is a big debate about camping and Polar Bears in the area and I really am not knowledgeable to comment on it. So sorry if my comment bothered you. I think the authorities make people very aware of the risks. I'm not sure the polar bears understand the risks to their lives, though.

2:30 To me it looks like the polar bear is within the perimeter. Even if it wasn't it doesn't look like the perimeter is complete. At first it looked like it had toppled the corner of the perimeter and was inside. Needless to say I'm still confused.

We used a strong lens. This makes it hard to judge where exactly the bear is walking. No problems: it did not cross the fence.

Researcher: "Fences are really effective in protecting both humans camp sites and bears" Some American on youtube: "haha you're wrong and stupid actually and I know better than you. you should just shoot all the wildlife and bears actually don't care about the fence whatsoever." No wonder America has a shooting problem. Seems like there's no education about de-escalation and peaceful action. Everything is a threat that requires killing, even if you're the stranger 😬

The ONLY thing that kept you alive was luck. If the bear is certain there is a bountiful food source, that fence will barely slow it down.

I'd like a Barret Model 82, just in case they really want to test the fence. You'd need a lot of luck on your side to kill one of these things with a .30 cal. I'd like a weapon capable of dropping lightly armored vehicles.

What if the bear came charging in really fast and busting through really quick if there was a person inside the fence? Could the fence prevent that type of attack?
@joukeprop
@joukeprop Жыл бұрын
No, it would not. Our system is semi-portable. A next step in safety is using permanent, sturdy poles. In our experience, a polar bear dashing in would be exceptional though. In the 14 summers that we use electric fences we had dozens of polar bear approaches and, if not scared by us, bears were cautious and touched the fence by nose first.
@yourkarma8331
@yourkarma8331 Жыл бұрын
@@joukeprop I see, so their cautiousness and curiosity won't allow them to just bust through the fence like that. They have to check it out first to see if it's dangerous. Thanks for the response....and 14 summers? I'm jealous.
