I own this kit, and can fit the entire thing, plus ride & hh, into a cymbal bag. HH stand, throne, and a cymbal clamp for the ride go in a small hw bag. Fits under the bed, can take it easily in the car. It's perfect for what I use it for. Works very well for basement jams, the park, busking, practice. Can easily bring along a third bag with a snare & pancake floor tom if you want a 3-piece kit. Prices have gone up, so it's not the deal it once was, but at $200, it's worth it. At $400, there are probably nicer options (Dixon Little Roomer, Tama Club Jam Mini) that still can fit under the bed. The Pearl Fat and Skinny pairs really well as either a full-size snare or a floor tom. Brushes kind of suck on the 10" snare. I'm sure similar stuff, like the Tama 14x3, would work as well.

Kangaroo Hide Heads are real skin Remo Fyberskyn is a synthetic alternative for real skin but Calftone is a synthetic alternative for Calfskin, wich is not the same as kangaroo skin, well i think that. Let me know what do you guys think.

Gooood Morning!!! Greetings from the states! (one of the ones where reasonable people gather ;) I realize this is is from a wee bit ago, but Just finally snagged an Acrolite ( late 60's ) Previously had a 66 Jazz Festival Blue Sparkle snare that I sold to Tom Jones' drummer ( whacky world ). Been listening to the Timpano Percussion's "Evans Remo, Aquarian snare drum head comparison". ( An Amazing video ( they have one for bass drum heads also - and are really fun to watch., fyi) Anyhoo, I am about to strip this badboy down to the shell and refurb/lubricate everything. Thankfully the P85 has no issues, so ..Joy. Bow ties are all shiny and aside from the original heads and wires (!!) housing some spider webs in the shell, I am hopeful this will be a great little firecracker. ( Sounds great straight out of the box! ..Normally, as I am sure you now, some just choke everything and ship it. ...makes me want to hurl hammers. I will be trying a Remo Renaissance coated and a pinstripe coated ( two ply 7 (or 7.5mil) with slight tone control. ( I don't use anything but tuning to get the tone to ring properly. ( Or rather, Pleasantly.. Like drums should :) My kick is a 1929 Ludwig Pioneer 14 x 26 No holes anywhere. Smooth Ambassador on Reso, Smooth Emperor on Batter, tho may change to an Evans Calftone for some enhanced low end. For w.i.w, there is a Remo Ambassador Skyntone that is quite a special head.. Can easily tune it for a very motown sound should you want to experiment. Anyway, Thanks man! Cool video. Much appreciated. Cheers!! ^..^

I have this kit in the "New Roundbadge Model" which I understand means that it is now made in the DW factory in Taiwan, to Gretsch's specs. It is fantastic. The only mods I made were to replace the 1.6mm hoops with 2.3mm hoops and upgrade the snare wires to 20-strand PureSound. Yes, this kit is that good. I play jazz and I've been playing since 1966.

Although I'm too snobby to buy these "lower line" series, I'm grateful people do these comparisons for beginner or thrifty drummers. I'm sure they're both solid choices. Especially if you're stuck letting another drummer/band sit-in or use your kit.

I used Remo heads for decades. The I tried Aquarian heads and I never went back. I'm not knocking Remo in anyway as I believe you can get great sounds out of Remo, Aquarian and Evans. Those are the three top drum head companies in my humble opinion..

Every "innovation" that DW has come up with, has just been a rehashing of an idea that wasn't theirs. The swivel spring rocker, the rounded cam sprocket, adjustable cam, the 2 way plastic/felt beater, the extended foot board, spring lock, etc. All not of their conception. Not to say that they didn't improve on those aspects of modern pedal design and engineering, it's just that they over engineered these features to show that they're innovative, when they're not..Whatever the case, these comparisons are all subjective, and each drummer's playing style, technique, ability, and more importantly their physiology, all play a part on how these pedals respond. DW's best pedal ever made, was the single chain 5000 pedal. Smooth, fast, and light, yet delivering a lot of power. This is why they brought it back, because it was, and still is revered by working and pro drummers alike.

Second post here after a re-listen. Marco this is an excellent review. Thanks. For me my favorite companies are Istanbul Agop and Bosphorous. I like them so much better than the Big Four - Zildjian, Meinl, Sabian and Paiste. However my Paiste hihats are sublime. Great we all have different tastes. Cheers. Bill.

I own the 435 and I must say that, in my honest opinion, they don't sound too well listening to mastered music. Pretty boomy in the low and low mids (80-200hz range) and seem to lack proper high end. But then again, officially they are IEM's and that's why I bought them. When recording drums as home, I immediately noticed a really nice silky high end from the cymbals, hihat and the snare reso head (even without bottom mic). Playing live with my band also gave me a really nice performing experience as all of the instruments, including 1x drum overhead, 1x snare and 1x kick, translated really well in the context of the mix. I was used to the Shure SE-215, but never again after experiencing the 435. Can't go wrong here for this price.
