I loved the parade when it wasn’t as organized as it is now. The plumed costumes were magnificent. I guess the feathers became too expensive and/ or laws were enacted to protect the birds. If we didn’t go to watch it, it was on our TV all day.

Already, the park was picketed by protesters calling for integration. Finally, it was in August of 1963. Morally, it wasn't right to keep black folks out. Still, some whites who had patronized the park for years, stopped going. By the early 60s, the neighborhood surrounding it was changing, as whites stampeded out and blacks moved in. A sad but familiar racial demographic story across the country.

How was Ferko missed on this film? They finished a close second in 67 to Fralinger losing the top spot by a fraction of a point and were the winningest string band of all-time?? What a shame.
@mozzermemories7 ай бұрын
Yes, it is a shame. Was Ferko after Greater Overbrook? If so, I think the explanation is that we ran out of film.

If these films had originally been recorded with sound, that would be nice. Adding sound now would not be feasible without the help of all of the string bands.

I actually marched in this parade when I was 17 and a senior in high school, playing the trombone for some mummers dressed up like vikings and some kind of car float. I didn't see us in this video, but it was sure fun to watch! The old Esso sign was cool, too. Thanks for posting it.

Is that Turner's campground?
@mozzermemories8 ай бұрын
I think so. I'm hoping someone can help me confirm that it is, perhaps by recognizing the view. And was it always called Turner's?
@roccodonato62368 ай бұрын
@@mozzermemories I'm not sure how long Turners campground was around. I had a mother who cleaned for the owners around the early 2000's. That's when I discovered it. I just camped there last summer. The view looks about right for the 70's. Unfortunately, that was the last year of Turner's high view campground. It is now closed and will be turned into residential housing soon. I hear it's going to be high end housing.
@mozzermemories8 ай бұрын
@@roccodonato6236 My late mother wrote in her diary: "1970 Labor Day weekend. Camping near Bloomsburg, Pa. 'High View' campgrounds." She didn't write "Turner's," and that's all that I had to go by to identify the location of this film footage. Sorry to hear the land is going to be developed; that's very disappointing.
@roccodonato62368 ай бұрын
@@mozzermemories My guess is that "High View Campground" evolved into Turner's high view campground at some point. The place where you are playing basketball had a home put there years later continuing the campground around it. I was told that the campgrounds finest days were in the late 80's. Only an educated guess, but I believe that the view is from Turner's Campground.

Sadly its been abandoned so we weren't able to go in for his nostalgia. My dad grew up in Wheaton Maryland. I love him very much and it was heartwarming seeing him washed over with memories from his childhood with his father. Thanks for the video!

I was born in Cumberland in 1951 and my grandfather, Howard Cessna worked for both the Western Maryland and the B&O railroads. He used to take me to the B&O yards and let me explore some of the locos that were in for service. Trips to the Western Maryland shops and station were common to when I was about 5 in 1956 & '57. g\Great video.

From 1959 thru 1961, I would routinely ride the Sightseer when I was 9 to 11 yr old. Capt Stocker always invited me into the wheelhouse to sit there and enjoy the ride. Several times, he allowed me to steer as we came back through Cold Spring Inlet. My father passed away when I was 11 and my dreams of someday being the successor to Capt Stocker came to an end. May Capt Stocker (and my dad) R.I.P....truely, a wonderful person he was!
