This is just what I needed. I've been thinking of switching to SUP to increase my wave count and wondered how long it would take to get comfortable. The answer seems to be to be that the transition is not easy! I wonder if you would have had more success on a bigger board? I'll definitely go for a big board to begin with after seeing this.

Great review how does the dd2 compare to pyzels phantom?
@ThomyeSurfsКүн бұрын
I've not tried the Phantom yet so, I can't really do a direct comparison but looking at the specs and shape, they are similar but I think the Phantom will have more rocker. which means it may require a bit more wave or curve to the wave. So, the phantom is more performance oriented. I think to get the same volume, you would have to go almost 2" longer on the phantom.

How did you like it compared to to the Sci Fi 2?
@ThomyeSurfs7 күн бұрын
SciFi2 is a much better groveler, wider tail, slightly wider in general. More volume to length. At my break, I liked the SciFi 2 better. Having said that, if it got much bigger and punchier, then the FRK+ features stand out. It also depends on how strong of a surfer you are. If you push hard, the narrower pulled in features work better. I consider myself an lower end advanced surfer but I don't push hard so for me, wider board end to work better.

Great surfing. Except at 8:27 where you kinda burnt that learner. I know surfing to the letter of surfing lore it was probably your wave? Good karma lets them have those waves and you can get some separation and still enjoy most of them. Hope these boards do come down under too like someone else said.

Great video! Great video ! THis is making me wonder if I should get this board, been thinkinh about picking one up! I just got the dominator 2 and the mashup and loving both baords. Wonder how this would fit in my quiver? Was all this shot on the solo shot and if so what version do you have?
@ThomyeSurfs7 күн бұрын
Yes, soloshot 3+. I have owned the soloshot 1, 3, and now the 3+. The 3+ is a game changer for calibration and setup but it still has issues. As for the Too Fish, it's a great option if you are looking for a fish. Depending on your waves and skill level, the Mashup could be a good Daily with the D2 as a step up option. Depending on how you sized it. The great thing about the Too Fish is that it is totally different from the other two boards. So having said that, I think it would be a great addition to your quiver, a fish that is. Something like a Too Fish, Album Sunstone, CI Twin fin, etc. Although I have only tested the Too Fish.

Super awesome video, thanks for keeping it quick and information driven! I rode the sushi soft top from costoco worst board ever btw lol! Have you tried a nub fin as a trailer on that board, wondering if it will let you throw that tail easier but still be able to control? What's your favorite go to 2+1 fins?
@ThomyeSurfs7 күн бұрын
no nub. I like the nub in quads with wide tails. as for my favorite 2+1, not sure I have one because it seems to change depending on the board. I love the NVS T Knox on the Mashup, hands down. I like the NVS Orcas in non swallow tails although it still worked well in the Mashup, just a tad too much hold. And right now, I am liking the NVS Krakens on my GWT. I know buying tons of fins isn't necessarily the best option but I feel like one should have a good spectrum of options otherwise you may be limiting yourself. The Orcas are like the Futures EN btw. I just choose NVS cuz they are cheaper giving me more options.

How does this compare to the dominator 2.0?
@ThomyeSurfs7 күн бұрын
It's hard for me to compare because I tested the Dom2 in 5'4, 25+ liters. I think I would need to compare it to the 5'6 Dom2 in order to have a better idea but one thing about the Dom2 is that the wide point is back from center. That makes the board feel smaller. so in order for me and my front footedness, I would want to ride it 5'7 or 5'8 but then it's way more liters. 5'8 was my favorite size for the original dom but that put me at 31L. It felt the best but then wasn't great in bigger waves cuz of the liters. Long explanation short, I prefer the DD2 in comparison to the Dom2 size the volume ratio.

anything with a wider tail, back when I did the review, I was thinking of the Seaside, Twice Baked, Rocket Wide, etc. For a place like Bolsa Chica, most soft smaller waves, or big and soft, that narrow tail required the surfer to push hard. so if you are a power surfer, the HK is a good option, but most of my friends aren't at that level. They don't push with their back foot at all. :( I too only use my back foot slightly so wider tails work for me best. Now with more recent reviews. Mashup is good, the White Tiger, etc. Hope that helps. For a very heavy back foot or advance surfer, the HK and something like the GSkate works for them cuz it gets them into soft small waves but then they push so hard, the narrower tails are preferable.

On the mashup did you run this as a straight twin or were you running a stabilizer?
@ThomyeSurfs7 күн бұрын
for me, always with stabilizer. NVS makes a Keel convertible called the Ono's. With those I would run as a pure twin but with most normal fin shapes, I need a stabilizer. I'm very heavy front footed and that pressure lifts the tail out of the water. So twins feel super loose and not enough control.

Hey Thomye, great review! What are your thoughts on this board compared to the hypto krypto? I know they are different setups, quad vs thruster, however, you seemed to like both of these boards in your reviews and wanted to see how you compare them and which you would choose for a Socal groveler through to medium-sized waves. Thanks!
@ThomyeSurfs7 күн бұрын
to keep it brief, I would say the BQ for smaller waves, the HK for bigger waves. The HK is fun up front, better paddle, easy to catch waves, but it is all business in the back. Narrow tail sinks in slower, softer, weaker waves. Unless you are advanced and you push hard on your tail constantly (and I mean constantly), the BQ is just a much easier board to ride.

Got some decent waves for the GWT!! What were your quick thoughts on the board? I'm intrigued to try one!
@ThomyeSurfs16 күн бұрын
with the right fins, NVS Kraken or similar, the board was fast and responsive. I have this joke with my friends that I can't do 4 turn on a wave and if I get three, it's all board. The first wave where I got 3 and a half turns felt so good. I lost control on the first turn, my tail felt like it slipped but the recovery was super fast and quick off the bottom, right to the top. I really like the board, similar to my old Modern 2 but more suited for performance. Softer waves was a bit tougher. Hoping to get a few more good days on it. Definitely worth a go.

Great review! Like you, I hate the sluggish feeling of soft tops. But I always felt Surftech's longboards were equivalent enough because of the epoxy bottom, also. I believe Walden's Magic Models have that same "chined" rail. Anyway, it makes me want to try one out because you rip it. But I always wonder if I'd be going faster on a "real" surfboard. LOL.
@ThomyeSurfs16 күн бұрын
it trucks along and makes sections but I noticed that the speed I generate on top of the speed the wave gives me is slower. but as mentioned in the review, the lack of top end speed didn't affect me getting to the section to do the maneuver. very weird and hard to explain.
