hahaha, little buggers, I had 4 on me on Wednesday including one on the lip waiting for entry. Poa ensiformis however they did not do well due to lack of sunlight, others in fern stumps have done much better. The re planted tree fern is growing well.

Hello, thank you for your comment however I did show inside four caves. There are not many more that I could find that were interesting and the main cave had inappropriate graffiti that I edited out for good reason. Your comment makes me wonder if you watched the entire video or have been to the site and know of further caves.

Hi Ian, I have never added vegemite or any other lure ever, my SHB traps still catch them though. Just one point I must say to you, be aware of how much oil you pour into the SHB traps, I was told the oil is detrimental to the girls (I don't know how) I only fill to half and that way it does not spill when I'm inserting trap. Bee happy :) Mark

Numbers looked good; I think you only just lost her? I would suggest taking a frame of brood from your other hive so as you will have continued girls taking care of new created queen. You will lose production time of course, around a month till she is mated and laying. On another point, with the burr comb in the lid, why don't you add a super as they seem to be running out of room in bottom box? I still have some mating for you, remind me before next meeting :)

I can't understand why your lids have that space. Bees will always fill space with comb. It seems to be an Australian thing.
@ianswonderfulworld5974
@ianswonderfulworld5974 9 ай бұрын
Could well be. I built my own boxes and by memory the plans came from a Tasmanian bee group. I think it is this way so ventilation can be made by placing circular ventilation holes in the lid which I did not do. In future I would also construct the lid larger than the boxes to allow for overhang down the sides of the boxes for a better protection from the rain so moisture does not become trapped between the lid and box

We moved two tree ferns a week ago, following your instructions. (Cape Town, South Africa) One has not even noticed it has been moved ! The otger one niw has 3 dead branches. BUT my question is, the dead leaves smells strongly like fish / fishy. Is that normal ? Or have we just not noticed it before ?
@ianswonderfulworld5974
@ianswonderfulworld5974 10 ай бұрын
Ferns can have issues with pest infestations such as nematodes and fern mites. Root rot and overly wet or waterlogged soils can result in unpleasant smells. It takes a couple of years to see the tree ferns bounce back or die.

May I suggest ? - place one of those filter bags inside your collection bucket - that way you only need to lift the bag out and place it into the honey press when you are done collecting for the season - when you have completed the pressing, you lift the bag out with all the wax castings and other debris and it will also keep the wax from squeezing through the metal sieve - once you feel resistance, walk away for about 20-30 minutes, then continue with more pressing - let more of the honey drain from the castings and combs and you will get a bit more out of the wax.

Hi Ian, I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you're going to be planting for Australian butterflies. I live in the mildest area of the UK, Cornwall, and we're able to grow a lot of Australian and NZ species here very well. I'm always on the lookout for new species to try (with an emphasis on bees and butterflies) so I'm glad I found this channel. Does Yvonne's Butterfly Grden also have a channel or internet page somewhere?

Are you putting the crown board directly on top of the frames? I put mine on the rim of the box which gives the bee's room to go over the top of the frames which might help with the ventilation and stop the moisture Just a suggestion from what I saw on the video, forgive me if I am wrong
